The historical EPCOT will enter the next generation with a behind-the-scenes special on Nat Geo called EPCOT Becoming.
In 1966, Walt Disney coined the name EPCOT, which stands for Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. The EPCOT Center in Disney opened on October 1, 1982, costing around $1 billion. During the later days of Disney’s life, he envisioned a city where people would live, play, and work, and would house the technologies of the future. However, before Disney put this idea to fruition, he died, leaving the dream unfulfilled.
The leaders of the company after his death saw fit to keep the idea alive, but on a smaller scale. His ideologies for this center actually played a huge part in how the park is laid out today. The company highlights emerging technologies and optimism for the future, which is the theme of the center. The Spaceship Earth has been the iconic image associated with EPCOT. Monday’s special, entitled EPCOT Becoming, will give an exclusive glimpse into the transformation of EPCOT. It will showcase the reimagining of the center for the next generation.
