The French Grand Prix will take place at the Circuit Paul Ricard this weekend.
Circuit Paul Ricard is a unique challenge on the Formula 1 calendar because its distinctive look can sometimes confuse viewers and drivers alike. Drivers will get four looks at the track before Sunday’s French Grand Prix, with the second practice session set for Friday.

The track’s distinctiveness comes from its black and blue run-off areas, the Blue Zone. It’s a mix of asphalt and tungsten instead of more traditional gravel traps. A second, deeper area is the Red Zone, with an abrasive surface conducive to maximizing grip (and extreme tire wear). Finally, there are Tecpro barriers instead of tire walls.
The 3.63-mile circuit includes 15 turns, but drivers can push harder because the chances of getting to a wall are less than on more conventional tracks.
Max Verstappen won at the Le Castellet track last year, his first victory there, and leads the driver standings entering the second half of the Formula 1 calendar. He holds a 38-point lead over Charles Leclerc, who won two weeks ago in Austria, while Sergio Pérez is 57 points behind.
