Team Penske rebounded from a drama-filled week by taking the front row for Sunday’s Children’s of Alabama Indy Grand Prix

Team Penske, rocked by penalties that stripped Josef Newgarden of his victory at the season-opening Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, bounced back on Saturday as Scott McLaughlin won the pole position and Will Power earned the second spot on the starting grid for Sunday’s Children’s of Alabama Indy Grand Prix. Newgarden and McLaughlin were disqualified from the St. Petersburg race last weekend after IndyCar Series officials determined the two drivers illegally used the Push to Pass system in the race. Power received a 10-point penalty in the standings after officials ruled he received illegal information but did not use it. The ruling also shook up the standings, with Newgarden plunging to 11th place and losing all but one point, earned for the fastest lap.

McLaughlin worked his way from fourth position to the top of the podium last year at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama, finishing 1.7854 seconds better than Romain Grosjean. The asphalt circuit opened in 2003 and first hosted the IndyCar Series in 2010. The 2.38-mile layout includes 16 turns.

After the dust settled last week in Long Beach, Scott Dixon jumped into the lead in the driver standings after his victory in California, two points clear of Colton Herta. Defending series champion Álex Palou trails by 10 points, followed by Pato O’Ward — awarded the St. Petersburg victory after Newgarden’s disqualification — and Power.

Christian Lundgaard starts Sunday’s race from the third position with O’Ward, Felix Rosenqvist and Marcus Armstrong rounding out the drivers who reached the Fast Six during Saturday’s qualifying.
