In the crowded race for the final playoff spot in the NHL’s Eastern Conference, the New York Islanders (37-27-16) sit in the most favorable spot of any of the teams in contention heading into play on Monday. The Islanders currently hold the last of three playoff spots in the Metropolitan Division, but are just three points up on the Washington Capitals and Philadelphia Flyers. The Detroit Red Wings are also three points back, and could become a factor if the Islanders fall into a Wild Card spot. Hoping to avoid that scenario, the Islanders take the ice on Monday night against the New Jersey Devils (38-38-5) and would officially clinch their playoff spot with a win.
