The defending Major League Rugby Shield champion New England Free Jacks (5-1-0, 24 points) host a battle of MLR powers on Saturday afternoon as the Western Conference-leading Seattle Seawolves (6-1-0, 29 points) invade Veterans Memorial Stadium in Quincy, Massachusetts. New England leads the second-place Chicago Hounds by six points in the Eastern Conference while the Seawolves stand five points clear of both the San Diego Legion and Houston SaberCats. The Free Jacks claimed their first MLR Shield last season in its first championship game appearance. Seattle won the Shield the first two years of competition in the MLR, 2018 and 2019, and lost the final in 2022.

New England picked up its fourth consecutive victory a week ago, handing the host SaberCats 47-35 their first loss to earn the full five points in the standings, four for the win and the bonus point for scoring at least four tries. Wayne van der Bank touched the try line three times himself while Jayson Potroz logged 17 points with a try and six conversions.
The Seawolves ran their winning streak to three matches with a 36-5 rout of expansion RFC Los Angeles on Sunday, earning the bonus point with five tries. Two of those came from Rick Hattingh while Sam Windsor scored a try, three conversions and a penalty goal kick.
Seattle’s lone loss came to visiting Houston 42-40 on March 22. The Free Jacks’ only defeat also came on home turf in a 35-34 loss to Old Glory DC on March 9.
