Tuesday’s game was another close one between these teams. After the Mariners scored one run in the top of the fourth, the Astros answered with two in the bottom half of that same frame. Neither team scored again until the bottom of the eighth when designated hitter Yordan Alvarez – fresh off a recent contract extension – hit a two-run home run.
The Astros improved to 36-20 with that win, extending their lead in the AL West. They’re now three games behind the Yankees for the best record in the American League.
Houston has been a problem for opponents both at the plate and on the mound this year. They’ve hit 72 home runs this season, which is tied for the second-best in baseball. At the same time, their 3.01 team ERA ranks third.
Representing that pitching staff on Wednesday will be righty Jose Urquidy. Urquidy is 5-2 with a 4.76 ERA. Seattle will counter with Logan Gilbert, who has been outstanding this year with a 2.22 ERA and 5-2 record in 11 starts.
