The Rangers will have home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs as they set out on their quest to hoist the Stanley Cup for the first time in three decades after going a remarkable 30-11 at home this season. The Capitals finished the regular season winning four of their last five games to sneak into the postseason after missing the playoffs a year ago. Rangers winger Artemi Panarin finished fourth in the NHL with his team-high 120 points marking the first time in his nine-year career he cracked the 100-point mark.

Panarin, in his fifth year with New York, scored a career high 49 goals while playing in all 82 games for the second season in row.

Veteran winger Alex Ovechkin will play in his 148th career playoff game where he has tallied 72 goals and 69 assists for Washington in the postseason. Ovechkin ranks 15th all time in postseason goals trailing Joe Pavelski and Dino CiccarellI  by one goal is eight goals away from cracking the top ten all-time in playoff goals.

The season series was split 2-2 with the home team winning all four games with each of the last two games being decided by one goal.
