College BaseballCollege baseball is a popular sport in the United States played by student athletes from colleges and universities. Teams in the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) compete in the regular season and participate in post-season play. The season usually begins the first week of February and ends with the College World Series the second weekend of June. National Collegiate baseball is divided into three divisions: Division I, Division II and Division III. Division I is comprised of the most competitive teams and the most members. The NCAA College World Series is played in Omaha, Nebraska and is Division I’s championship tournament. Division II and III baseball typically culminate in the NCAA championship tournament. The grand majority of College baseball is non-scholarship competitions, and the NCAA does not allow redshirting to occur. All players regardless of seniority must compete in either the same division or in part-time preparation courses. In the event of an international student wishing to compete, there is a substitution model allowing such athletes to play at full-time institutions for part-time periods. In the 2020 season, some of the most popular teams included Vanderbilt, Texas Tech, Mississippi State, and UCLA. The Texas Tech Red Raiders were the 2019 College World Champions. The 2020 Division I Baseball season consisted of 56 conferences and 347 member institutions. The regular season where teams competed in conference play and the non-conference games culminated with the NCAA tournament. The tournament consisted of 64 teams divided into 16 four-team regions. The College World Series was held in Omaha, Nebraska once again and featured Texas Tech, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, and UCLA. College baseball has a growing fan base and is broadcast nationally on networks such as MLB Network, ESPN, and Fox Sports. Popular current players include Adley Rutschman (Oregon State), Andrew Vaughn (California), Emerson Hancock (Georgia), and Brandon Martin (Mississippi State). Notable College Baseball alumni include Jackie Robinson, Walt Weiss, Barry Bonds, and Roger Clemens.
