Now an Army sergeant, Gene Autry (Gene Autry) is dispatched to persuade a number of landowners to sell their territory to the military for a new base. The ranchers are hesitant, and Gene discovers that the driving force behind their resistance is Stevenson (Jonathan Hale), a local mine owner trying to stir up trouble in hopes of scaring the military into offering a bigger paycheck for his land. As Stevenson incites tension between the ranchers and the Army, Gene tries to intervene.
