After taking a spill, jockey Ted Malloy (John Duncan) is hesitant to ride again. Rancher Gene Autry (Gene Autry) thinks he's found the perfect horse with which the rider can resume his career. But when a fracas at the ranch allows the horse to break free, Gene, backed by assistant Droopy Stearns (Sterling Holloway), is forced to track it down. Realizing he needs a better viewpoint to search for the horse, Gene heads to the sky in the airplane of fellow rancher Kit Barlow (Peggy Stewart).

But, as he heals, he senses all is not well, and realizes that the suspicious men leading the train are taking the settlers to land owned by his estranged half-brother, an embittered man who will shoot any strangers. Ned then tries to warn the pioneers, while preparing to face the sibling who harbors a deep-seated grudge against him.
