When Dave Johnson and his family arrive from Michigan, they're unfazed that their new dream home is located in a community quite different from their previous small town. However, their opinionated next-door neighbor Calvin Butler is wary of the newcomers, certain that they'll disrupt the culture on the block. Dave realizes that fitting in with the new community is more complex than he had expected, but if he can find a way to connect with Calvin, there's an excellent chance of making the new neighborhood a great place to live.

Marty prepares to propose to his girlfriend; Calvin and Tina work with party planner Chika to throw a celebration that properly honors their future daughter-in-law's Nigerian heritage.

When Dave decides to disconnect the Johnson home from the grid, he inadvertently causes a community-wide power outage; in the wake of Marty's engagement, Tina struggles with no longer being the primary woman in her son's life.

When Calvin takes Dave's suggestion to try a new method of promoting his business, he soon comes to regret it; Gemma recruits Tina to rescue her struggling after-school music program.

When Calvin is overwhelmed by work, Dave volunteers to counsel his friend; Tina confides in Gemma that she's eager to make a career change.
