Top 5 Quarterbacks Entering the Transfer Portal

The transfer portal has evolved the way players move colleges in the offseason. Here are the top five quarterbacks who have entered the portal.

The college football landscape has changed since the transfer portal rules have been altered. Now, any player can transfer any year without penalty. As a result, the portal has become a modern-day professional free agency pool. With most team’s seasons being over already, dozens of players have already announced that they will be looking for a new home for their next season. We will take a look at the top five quarterbacks who have already announced their decision to leave their former school for a new home.

Dillon Gabriel (Former Team: Oklahoma)

Dillon Gabriel had the most outstanding season of any quarterback in the nation that is not a current Heisman finalist. Gabriel ended his season with his team ranked as the No. 12 team in the nation losing just two games all year to Kansas and Oklahoma State in back-to-back games. They have tough wins against Texas, currently in the playoffs, and TCU. Gabriel threw for 3,660 yards and 30 touchdowns with six interceptions. He had an 87.3 QBR which was No. 4 in the country. He also added 12 touchdowns on the ground with 373 yards. A total of 42 touchdowns is impressive.

Kyle McCord (Former Team: Ohio State)

Kyle McCord had a rough season and under the spotlight of one of the best college football programs in the nation, it isn’t hard to see why McCord wants out. Typically, players, as some of these transfers will be, would be lining up to get a spot on Ohio State’s roster. However, for McCord things are going to be different this season. Last year, he finished with 3,170 yards and 24 touchdowns with six interceptions with one of the best receiving corps in the nation including Heisman finalist Marvin Harrison Jr.

Cameron Ward (Former Team: Washington State)

Cameron Ward finished the 2023 season with Washington State unranked as a team. However, Ward, himself, finished in the top five among quarterbacks in the nation in total yards. He had 3,735 yards with 25 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Those are commendable statistics sitting behind a subpar line with subpar receivers. He also had eight touchdowns with his legs as well providing an elite advantage to wherever he goes on the goalline.

Dante Moore (Former Team: UCLA)

Dante Moore, a freshman quarterback for UCLA, will be on the move. He finished in rookie campaign with 1,610 yards and 11 touchdowns with nine interceptions. He boasted just a 33.1 QBR and averaged just 7.6 yards per pass. He took 25 sacks this season which averages to almost three per game. He ranks sub-100 in total yards despite missing three games due to injury. Dante Moore will look to revive an otherwise mediocre start to his career with another program under another coach with another receiving corps.

Riley Leonard (Former Team: Duke)

Riley Leonard played just seven games this season for Duke before getting injured ending his year. After losing several key games against top-25 opponents and dominating everyone before that, Leonard will look for a new home. In just under half the year, Leonard had 1,102 yards and three touchdowns with three interceptions and a Top-30 QBR. If you multiply that, he would have been over a 2,000-yard passer. In that short amount of time as well, he ran for 352 yards and four touchdowns. He would have easily been able to be considered a dual-threat quarterback.
