Game 2 of the semifinals between the New York Islanders and Tampa Bay Lightning went about the way the storylines were projecting. The Lightning have not lost consecutive games in these playoffs. They weren't about to do that this late into the playoffs and there was no way this great Islanders defense could stifle the defending champs two games in a row. Well that's exactly what happened in Tampa where the Lightning dominated the third period to tie the series. The series shifts back to New York now though where the Islanders will look to reverse the narrative that they are the inferior team. They've got a real shot at flipping the script from last year's semifinals and pull away from the Lightning.

Everything was going well for New York until what replayed showed was Islanders defenseman Adam Pelech shoved the Lightning's Brayden Point in goaltender Semyon Varlamov. Point was called for goalie interference anyways. The Islanders evened the game on the ensuing Varly hit his head on the post and was replaced by rookie Ilya Sorokin. Varlamov was able to return to the game but the Lightning proved to be too much the rest of the way. It didn't help that they were able to score with seven players on the ice but the goal was upheld and coach Barry Trotz understandably went ballistic.

Regardless of that ridiculous goal, the Lightning's offense is just too good. Let's put it this way. The NHL's playoff scoring leader, Nikita Kucherov, didn't even have to score a goal to become the first star in this one. He creates scoring chances just about as good as anyone like the Phoenix Suns Chris Paul. He had three assists in this one and is picking up right where he left off after last year's Stanley Cup run where he left off leading the NHL in goals and assists in the 2020 playoffs.

The focus of Game 3 though will be on two other Russians beyond Kucherov. Varlamov and Lightning goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy are both representing their home country great by elevating their teams this far. If Varlamov is back to his normal veteran self and seems unaffected by a rough Game 2, with home ice the Islanders should be favored. He was good in his days with the Colorado Avalanche but it took this year with the Islanders to set career bests goals-against average, save percentage and shutouts. All Vasilevskiy has done is be the league's win leader over the past four years with a Stanley Cup and Vezina Trophy under his belt. He's arguably the best goalie still standing in the playoffs. Watch for the play of the goalies early. Whoever has the better night in net will prevail.
