New Quarterbacks in New Places: Who Looked Best in Week 1?

The first week of the 2023 NFL season saw five starting quarterbacks from last season wearing new uniforms and starting for new teams in Week 1. That does not include the three rookies who suited up the first week of the season, reshaping 25 percent of NFL teams with new leaders under center. All three rookie quarterbacks started the season with a loss, but the five veterans went 4-1.

Baker Mayfield started his first game with the Tampa Buccaneers leading them to a 20-17 win over the Minnesota Vikings. He went 21-for-34 for 174 yards and two touchdowns. Mayfield connected with Mike Evans in the second quarter for a 28-yard touchdown to tie the game heading into halftime. He followed that up with a seven-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to Trey Palmer to pick up the win. Mayfield is on his fourth team in four seasons as he looks to find a home in Tampa Bay.

Up next for Mayfield is his first home game against Justin Fields and the Chicago Bears (0-1).

Derek Carr was up next, leading the New Orleans Saints to a 16-15 win over the Tennessee Titans. He had a big day through the air with 303 yards and the game’s only touchdown on a 19-yard pass to Rashid Shaheed in the third quarter. Carr is building chemistry with Chris Olave (eight catches and 112 yards) and Michael Thomas (five catches and 61 yards) as the team awaits the return of Alvin Kamara from suspension.

Up next for Carr is a Monday Night Football game against No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young and the Carolina Panthers (0-1).

Jimmy Garoppolo had an efficient day in his first start for the Oakland Raiders, pushing them to a 17-16 win over the Denver Broncos. He formed a great connection with Jakobi Meyers, who finished the day with nine catches, 81 yards and two touchdowns. Garoppolo was an efficient 20-for-26 with 200 yards and a 107.9 passer rating.

Up next for Garoppolo is a road game against a highly motivated Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills (0-1).

Josh Dobbs became the starter for Week 1 for the Cardinals with Kyler Murray injured and the Cardinals releasing Colt McCoy. He finished the day 21-for-30 with 132 yards, getting sacked three times and fumbling the ball twice. Dobbs has been in the league for four seasons, spending two with the Pittsburgh Steelers and one with the Tennessee Titans, before getting this opportunity with Arizona this season.

Up next for Dobbs is a home game against the New York Giants (0-1).

The final new quarterback in a new place is Aaron Rodgers with the New York Jets, but he went down in the first series of the game on Monday with a torn Achilles after just four plays. Zach Wilson will now move into the starting role, a position he held last season.
