Atletico Madrid’s heroic home record will be put to the test as Girona visits in La Liga
There’s little rest for the wicked as Atletico Madrid returns to domestic duties in La Liga on Saturday, hosting Girona less than 72 hours after going up against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League quarter-finals. Diego Simeone’s side beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 at home in midweek to put one foot in the Champions League semi-finals, though the Spaniards can’t afford any distraction ahead of their return to La Liga. Girona, meanwhile, makes its way to the Estadio Civitas Metropolitano having not managed to win on the road in almost three months, and defeat in the capital could mean a hefty price is paid in the race to finish among La Liga’s top four.

Michel Sanchez’s men sit third in Spain’s top flight for the time being but have lost serious ground in the standings after looking like surprise title contenders in the first half of this season.
It’s largely Girona’s lacking away form that’s led to that drop in prospects, with the club losing its last four trips to foreign territory and set to visit one of Spain’s least forgiving grounds this weekend.
And Atleti has more than enough reason to be up for Saturday’s examination given Girona won 4-3 in the reverse tie earlier this year.
A 91st-minute winner from Ivan Martin decided things the last time these team faced off in January after Alvaro Morata thought his hat-trick had earned a point for Los Rojiblancos:
Simeone’s side were deserved victors over Dortmund on Wednesday and came away with the first-leg triumph, although it marked a ninth game in a row without a clean sheet.
Atletico sit fourth in La Liga as things stand but is a sizeable seven points below Girona and only two points above Athletic Bilbao, who is in hot pursuit of Champions League qualification.
Simeone’s hosts lost 3-0 at home to Barcelona in their last outing at the Metropolitano, but Atletico has proved impenetrable on home soil for the most part in La Liga.
