It's weird not to type a ranking next to LSU in the title of this preview. It's weird to type that South Carolina has a better record than the defending National Champions. Everything about this LSU season is weird and nothing like we expected. To be fair, the NFL was interested in drafting their entire team this year but no one expected the Tigers to come out flatter than champagne on January 2. In their two losses, they have given up a combined 89 points. Nothing has been working under new defensive coordinator Bo Pelini.
Their run game has not been up to snuff either after Clyde Edwards-Helaire left for the NFL. This offensive line has been subpar and not opened enough opportunities for leading rusher John Emery Jr. who only has one touchdown on the season. Then to add more disruption to the Tigers season, their game against Florida last week was postponed to December 12 due to the increase of COVID-19 cases on the Gators' side. Early in the season, head coach Ed Orgeron said most of his team contracted the virus. Needless to say, the Tigers could use some stability going into their matchup against South Carolina.

Unfortunately for the Tigers, they won't be getting that stability this week. The quarterback play has actually been a bright spot in this tumultuous season as starter Myles Brennan has already passed for over a thousand yards with 11 touchdowns to only three interceptions with the unenviable task of following up Joe Burrow.
The problem is that he suffered a lower body injury in the game against Missouri on October 10 and will not be available in this game. They will miss the leadership of the redshirt Junior as they've announced that they will start their highly rated Freshman QB TJ Finley. He will make his first career start on Saturday. Orgeron said though that he also plans to play freshman QB Max Johnson. Coach O said this was a coin flip decision on which quarterback to start.
Okay, enough about the Tigers. Their opponent is 2-2 with impressive wins of their own, most notably last week over #15 Auburn. The Gamecocks are led by their back Kevin Harris who nearly has 500 rushing yards in four games and has seen the end zone six times. QB Collin Hill won't light up any scoreboards but this offense is averaging more than 30 points a game. If Hill can hang onto the ball and manage this offense, they have a real shot here. South Carolina is just as good as Mississippi State and Missouri who beat LSU. In this crazy season, this upset isn't unfathomable at all.
