    During group play the United States was undefeated, needing overtime in an otherwise dominant display. They cruised through the first two matches against Switzerland (4-0) and Czechia (6-0) before a slight challenge from Finland (5-3). Then, in the final group stage match, the United States outlasted Canada 1-0 in overtime to remain undefeated.

    For Japan, it struggled losing to China (3-2, in overtime), Germany (4-1) and Sweden (6-2) before closing out group play with its only win over Denmark (3-0). That win helped put Japan into the quarterfinals today with the opportunity to pull off the biggest upset arguably in tournament history.
