Defending gold-medalist United States takes on rising world power Czechia in a key Group A matchup at the 2024 IIHF Women’s World Championship on Friday
The United States (1-0-0, 3 points), coming off a gold medal in last year’s IIHF Women’s World Championship, takes on Czechia (1-0-0, 3 points) in a key Group A game on Friday at the Adirondack Bank Center in Utica, New York. Czechia raised its international profile of late, taking bronze medals in each of the last two world championships. The national team in Czechia, then known as the Czech Republic, reached its first world championships in 2013 and became just the seventh nation to medal with its third-place finish in 2022. As for the U.S., it has medaled in each of the 22 worlds, including 10 golds.

The U.S. opened its tournament with a 4-0 victory on Wednesday over Switzerland. Aerin Frankel needed just 11 saves to post the shutout as the U.S. had a 55-11 shot advantage. Clarkson defenseman Haley Winn, just 20 years old, scored twice for the Americans, Kendall Coyne Schofield and Hilary Knight had the other tallies.
Czechia also won a 4-0 decision on Wednesday, blanking Finland. Klára Peslarová stopped 21 shots while 17-year-old Adéla Šapovalivová opened the scoring 7:23 into the second period and added an assist. Klára Hymlarová (St. Cloud State), Natálie Mlýnková (Vermont) and Tereza Plosová, also just 17, had the other tallies.
All five teams in Group A will advance to the knockout stage along with the top three finishers in Group B. Group A includes the top five finishers from last year’s tournament in Brampton, Ontario.
