The Iowa Cubs (2-2) opened their six-game series with the Toledo Mud Hens (2-2) at Principal Park in Des Moines with an extra-innings victory on Tuesday and look for a third straight victory on Wednesday. Iowa features two of the top prospects in the Chicago Cubs organization in outfielders Pete Crow-Armstrong (No. 1) and Owen Caissie (No. 3). Crow-Armstrong, No. 16 in MLB Pipeline’s Top 100, is off to a 4-for-17 start while Caissie, ranked 45th, is 8-for-16. Infielder Jace Jung is the fourth-ranked prospect for the Detroit Tigers and No. 57 on the Top 100, and is 3-for-14 so far for the Mud Hens. Outfielder Justyn-Henry Malloy, No. 7 in Detroit’s system, started the season 5-for-13.

Curt Casali’s ground ball through the right side scored Luis Vasquez in the bottom of the 10th as the Cubs took a 5-4 victory on Tuesday. Iowa trailed 4-1 before putting three on the board in the eighth on an RBI triple by Crow-Armstrong and run-scoring doubles from Alexander Canario and Matt Mervis.
Toledo scored three times in the top of the first with Akil Baddoo’s RBI single wrapped between Jung’s sacrifice fly and a bases-loaded walk to Dillon Dingler. Starter Bryan Sammons struck out six in four innings while allowing a run on two hits.
Neither team declared a starting pitcher in advance of Wednesday’s game.
