Men’s champion Evans Chebet of Kenya seeks a 3-peat on Monday while defending women’s winner Hellen Obiri faces a stacked field.

Evans Chebet arrives at the start line in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, on Monday with a chance to become the first man to win three consecutive Boston Marathons since fellow Kenyan Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot turned the trick from 2006-08. After initial forecasts called for temperatures of 75 degrees or higher, current forecasts call for a race start in the high 40s before climbing into the mid-60s by afternoon. On the women’s size, defending champion Hellen Obiri returns after running a personal-best 2:21:38 a year ago, the fastest Boston time in the women’s field but just 16th overall among the group of elite competitors.

Ethiopia’s Sisay Lemma ran a 2:01:48 last year at Valencia and has the fastest recorded time among men’s elite competitors. Chebet’s career-best of 2:03:00 also came at Valencia in 2020. His 2:05:54 time last year in Boston was the fastest since Kenyan Geoffrey Mutai set the course record with a 2:03:02 in 2011.

Kenyans have won the last four men’s races and five of the last six, with Japan’s Yuki Kawauchi the lone exception with his victory in 2018. Seven runners in the men’s field have personal-bests of faster than 2:05, including Tanzania’s Gabriel Geay, Kenyans Ronald Korir and Cybrian Kotut and Ethiopia’s Hafta Teklu and Shura Kitata.

Top Americans in the field include Matt McDonald on the men’s side, who ran a 2:09:49 in Chicago in 2022, and CJ Albertson, who posted a 2:10:52 in Duluth the same year. Sara Hall’s personal-best of 2:20:32 came in 2020 at Chandler while Emma Bates finished second in Boston a year ago with a PR of 2:22:10.
