Two-seed Duke hosts ASUN champ Utah in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday.

After falling to top-ranked Notre Dame in the ACC Championship Final last weekend, No. 2 seed Duke squares off against ASUN champ Utah in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday. The Blue Devils enter the tournament as the ACC runner-ups with a 12-5 overall record and a 7-2 mark at Koskinen Stadium, opening the NCAA Tournament at home in Durham as one of the tournament’s top-8 seeds. Utah, on the other hand, has won nine straight games to improve to 12-4 overall with a 6-2 road record. The Utes punched their ticket to the NCAA Tournament by winning the ASUN Championship over Jacksonville, tying a single-season record for wins in a season. This will be the second all-time matchup between these two teams, with Duke winning the last meeting back in 2019.

Most recently, the Blue Devils were smothered by top-ranked Notre Dame in a 16-6 loss to the Irish in the ACC Championship Final last weekend. As for Utah, the Utes took down Jacksonville to win the ASUN Championship by a final score of 16-13 at the Air Force Academy last weekend. Ryan Stines led the way with five goals in the win, while Jared Andreala finished with a hat trick and Tyler Bradbury had four points on the day.

The United States looks to bounce back from a loss when it takes on Germany in the IIHF World Championships

The United States continues group play on Saturday afternoon when it takes on Germany. The Americans got off to a tough start on Friday when they lost their opener 5-2 against Sweden. They never led in the game as they gave up the first two goals. They would close it to one twice, but could never get the game tied and they lost. The Americans didn’t lose a group game last year and are now in an unfamiliar spot. Saturday they will look to get back on track against a German team that is coming off a win in their first game.

The Germans opened up play against Slovakia on Friday and came away with a 6-4 win. It was an up-and-down game that the Germans were able to finally put away in the third period.

The two teams were scoreless after one, but the Germans opened up the scoring with the first two goals of the second period. Slovakia would score the next two to tie the game, but Lukas Kalble scored in the last minute to take back the lead.

They would hold off the Slovakian team in the third period and got a huge opening game win. Saturday they will look to pick up a big upset to send the Americans to their second straight loss.

Liberty and Western Kentucky will meet Saturday afternoon in the Conference USA Tournament final.

The stage is set for the Conference USA Tournament championship and on Saturday afternoon, second-seeded Western Kentucky and top-seeded Liberty will meet in Las Cruces, Mexico. The Hilltoppers earned a spot in the title game after defeating New Mexico State 7-2 on Friday afternoon. Taylor Sanders and Sophie Weber powered the offense, both bringing in three RBI from a home run and a double, respectively. Weber also hit a solo shot in the fifth to bring in the team’s final run of the game. Katie Gardner pitched a complete game in the circle and struck out five batters while only giving up five hits in her 16th win of the season.

The Flames opened up tournament play against fourth-seeded New Mexico, falling 11-3 in five innings before bouncing back to beat sixth-seeded UTEP 13-10 and third-seeded Louisiana Tech in a 5-0 shutout yesterday. Against the Bulldogs, Kaylan Yoder got the start in the circle and pitched a complete game, fanning seven batters and only giving up three hits. Brooke Roberts led the offense, going 1-for-2 with two RBI with a sacrifice bunt in the second and an RBI single in the sixth.

When these two teams met during regular season play, Western Kentucky took the first game before Liberty won the second and third to secure the series victory.

HFX Wanderers FC hosts Cavalry FC on Saturday in Canadian Premier League action.

Wanderer Grounds is set to host the exciting weekend matchup between home side HFX Wanderers FC and visiting club Cavalry FC on Saturday in Canadian Premier League action. The visitors head into the meeting as the fifth-placed team in the CPL table with five points in four matches this season, courtesy of an overall record of one win, two draws and one loss. Despite bogeying the 18th for the 2nd straight day, Xander Schauffele maintains his 4-shot lead at the Wells Fargo Championship

Xander Schauffele finished his second round on Friday with his lone bogey of the day, giving back one shot of his lead entering the third round of the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte. It was the second straight day Schauffele bogeyed the 18th hole, but he retained a four-shot lead after a second-round 67. Rory McIlroy and Jason Day share second place at seven-under-par going into moving day. The Signature Event pays $3.6 million to the winner, who also earns 700 FedExCup points. Defending champion Wyndham Clark stands well out of contention after back-to-back rounds of 73.

Saturday afternoon, Week 7 of the 2024 UFL season gets underway with the Arlington Renegades (0-6) hosting the Memphis Showboats (1-5) at Choctaw Stadium. Both teams are looking to bounce back with a win after losses last week. Arlington came close to snapping its losing streak but fell 28-27 to the Michigan Panthers after a last-second 42-yard field goal from Michigan kicker Jake Bates at Ford Field. Wichita State looks to pull off another upset when it takes on Charlotte in the finals of the AAC Softball Tournament. The Shockers knocked off regular season champion FAU in the semifinals 12-2. It was their seventh straight win and third straight in the conference tournament. The Shockers offense has been awesome during the tournament as they have scored at least 11 runs in each game and have won two of the three games in five innings. It has been an impressive run for the Shockers and one she is trying to continue on Saturday against a 49ers team that they lost two of three to in the regular season.

Kentucky looks to clinch a series win against Florida on Saturday in SEC baseball action. The Wildcats came to town on Friday to open the series against the Gators and they got a huge 12-11 win in extra innings. It was a wild ending to a great game as the Wildcats trailed 6-3 heading into the eighth inning, but they scored three runs in the top of the eighth. The Gators would score two in the bottom of the eighth to take back the lead. The Wildcats responded with three runs in the ninth, but the Gators tied it in the bottom of the inning to send it to extras. The Wildcats scored three times for a third straight inning to take the lead and then held off a Gators rally to get their third straight win.

With the underdogs coming in riding a 12-game winning streak to an Atlantic 10 championship, unseeded Saint Joseph’s takes on six-seeded Virginia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday. 

Although they’re the heavy favorites to advance out of the first round, Virginia has lost four consecutive games heading into the NCAA Tournament with a 10-5 overall record. The Hoos lost in the ACC Tournament semifinals to top-seed Notre Dame, ending their season with losses to four straight ranked opponents. Saint Joseph’s, on the other hand, has won 12 straight games after taking down Richmond for the A10 title last Saturday. This is the third all-time matchup between these two teams, with the last meeting coming in the 2016 season.

Yale needs a sweep of archrival Harvard in its final Ivy League series of the year to clinch a spot in the conference tournament

Yale (16-22) has one path keep playing beyond Sunday — sweeping Harvard (12-24) in a three-game series that opens with the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday morning at George H.W. Bush ’48 Field in New Haven, Connecticut. The rest of the conference has finished its Ivy campaigns, with the Bulldogs able to move up from its current fifth-place spot to the No. 2 seed with a sweep. But one loss eliminates Yale and sends Penn to the tourney as the No. 4 seed along with top-seeded Columbia, Princeton and Cornell. The Bulldogs seek their first NCAA tourney bid since 2017 while the Crimson will miss the postseason for the fourth consecutive season.

William Byron, with 3 wins already in 2024, looks for a repeat of his victory at Darlington last year, with Goodyear 400 qualifying set for Saturday

The Goodyear 400 is back at Darlington Raceway for the fifth straight year since its return after a 15-year absence in 2020. With two races run during the COVID-19 pandemic season of 2020, five different winners have gone to victory lane in the previous four years. Last year, William Byron took the lead on the first lap of overtime and hung on to beat Kevin Harvick by 0.781 seconds. Byron is one of two three-time winners so far this season, joining Denny Hamlin. A rejuvenated Newcastle hosts Brighton in the hope of improving its odds of qualifying for Europe next season

Things are on the up for a Newcastle United team that’s looking to win three straight games for the first time in more than six months but host a tricky Brighton & Hove Albion team on Saturday. The Magpies are sat sixth in the Premier League and four points below Tottenham Hotspur directly above, with a chance of still qualifying for next term’s Europa League if they can piece together the right end to their campaign. Great Britain, which earned its way back to the Top Division, takes on defending champion Canada in Group A play at Prague Arena on Saturday

Canada, with a roster full of NHL players, comes to Prague Arena in Czechia looking for its second straight gold medal at the IIHF World Championships. The Canadians begin their quest on Saturday with a Group A matchup against Great Britain. The Brits, relegated to Division I-A in 2022, earned their way back into the Top Division with a first-place finish at the Group A tournament in Nottingham, England, last spring. Great Britain boasts no NHL players on its roster. Canada owns a record 28 gold medals in world championship play along with the most overall medals with 53. Great Britain’s lone gold medal came at the 1936 Winter Olympics before the IIHF broke away from the Olympics after the 1968 games. The last of the Brits’ five all-time medals was a silver in 1938.

A trio of young NHL starts headline Canada’s roster for the Worlds, led by Calder Trophy finalist Connor Bedard, last year’s No. 1 overall draft pick by the Chicago Blackhawks.
