Two of Europe’s most decorated clubs go to war once more as Real Madrid and Bayern Munich duke it out for a place in the Champions League final on Wednesday.

Real Madrid is just two wins from celebrating yet another momentous double as it hosts Bayern Munich in the second leg of a Champions League semifinal where everything sits on a knife’s edge. German juggernaut Bayern performed above its means last week and almost snared a first-leg advantage before Vinicius Junior scored his second of the evening to pull Real back level in the closing minutes. That means the winner at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday will advance no matter how slight the victory, with Carlo Ancelotti & Co. striving to reach their second Champions League decider in the last three seasons.

Both of these teams were 1-0 winners when they last featured in the European blockbuster, with Real beating Liverpool to the crown in 2022, while Bayern edged Paris Saint-Germain by the same margin in 2020.

The winners of 20 Champions League and European Cups between them, Real and Bayern are two of the most successful teams in continental history—albeit a disproportionate 14 of those titles belong to Real.

Los Blancos looked to be on the verge of a 2-1 defeat at the Allianz Arena before Vinicius stepped up to convert a late penalty in Bavaria, adding to his opening goal from the first half.

The Brazil winger will once again be key at home, where Real beat Cadiz 3-0 over the weekend and celebrated another title in La Liga following Girona’s 4-2 victory over Barcelona.

Jude Bellingham, Brahim Diaz and Joselu each got on the score sheet in that encounter as Ancelotti rested much of his first string in preparation for Wednesday.

Thomas Tuchel also rotated his guard as Bayern suffered yet another Bundesliga defeat on Saturday (its seventh of the season) and succumbed 3-1 at Stuttgart.

Eric Dier came off at the interval in that defeat and could be a doubt to face Real, while Matthijs de Ligt is still recovering, and the wide pairing of Raphael Guerreiro and Kingsley Coman are out of action.

Ange Postecoglou’s first season at Tottenham has still been a success

Three months into the season, Tottenham Hotspur were top of the Premier League table. Five points clear at the top, in fact. Ange Postecoglou hit the ground running as Spurs’ new manager playing a brand of exciting, entertaining soccer that immediately delivered results. The North London club was revitalised.

A lot has changed since then, though. Sunday’s 4-2 defeat to Liverpool was Tottenham’s fourth successive loss in the league. While Postecoglou’s team once led the Premier League, they are now destined to miss out on a place in the top four – and crucially, Champions League qualification for next season.

Postecoglou has become a target. Even some Tottenham supporters have taken aim at the Australian who has cut an increasingly frustrated figure on the touchline during recent matches. There is a growing contingent of pundits criticising Postecoglou for the way he is managing a team on the slide.

Some criticism is valid. Spurs have been a soft touch from set pieces over the last few months. Opponents have started to target Guglielmo Vicario who is undeniably weak coming for crosses. It’s also true that Tottenham have struggled against teams that target the wide areas with quick and decisive movements – Liverpool and Mohamed Salah did this on Sunday.

James Maddison hasn’t been able to rediscover his form since returning from injury. Without the England international at his best, Tottenham lack a way to create from possession phases, reducing them to a team that can only consistently create goalscoring opportunities through counter attacks.

Despite all this, though, Postecoglou’s first season at Tottenham has still been a considerable success. It’s understandable that supporters are feeling a pang of disappointment considering how the campaign started, but Spurs are still in a much better place now than they were back in August.

Spurs finished eighth in the Premier League last season with just 60 points. Postecoglou’s team has already matched that tally with three matches still to play and look likely to finish fifth, although they still have some work to do to fend off a late challenge from Newcastle United.

Keep in mind Tottenham also lost their best player and top scorer last summer when Harry Kane left the club to join Bayern Munich. Kane was the focal point of Spurs’ attack, and the club as a whole, and nothing was done to replace him in the transfer market. Timo Werner arrived in January, but the German has played as more of a winger under Postecoglou.

The loss of Kane hasn’t stopped Postecoglou from implementing a new style of play which has made Tottenham one of the most entertaining teams in the Premier League over the course of the season as a whole. Under Antonio Conte, Spurs fans complained about the dull nature of their team’s play. That hasn’t been an issue under his successor.

This season was always likely to be a transitional one for Tottenham and so it has proved. This is year one in a major rebuild of the squad, but also the culture at the North London club. Postecoglou was hired to give Spurs a new identity and he must be allowed to see through the process, at least into next season.

“We need change. Change has to happen,” Postecoglou said after a recent defeat to Chelsea. “You can’t want to alter your course and quite dramatically for this club because we went down a certain direction. And now we’re pivoting to a whole different direction, expect the same people are going to be on that. It’s just not going to happen.

“We’ve had two windows and we’ve had some development of players, for sure, but when I say we’ve still got a long way to go, that’s what I’m talking about. We can’t be there yet because it’s impossible to say you’re going to have drastic change and yet expect everyone to be on that journey.”

If Tottenham are to continue their development under Postecoglou, the club must deliver him the players he needs this summer. That might require some difficult decisions on players being moved out the club, but this process was never going to be easy. Despite this season ending in disappointment for Spurs, the end result could still be extremely positive.

It’s a getaway day game at Citizens Bank Park on Wednesday afternoon, as the Philadelphia Phillies (26-11) wrap up a two-game interleague series against the Toronto Blue Jays (16-20). Toronto came to town on Tuesday for the first game of this matchup between the American League East and National League East, but it was the home team that came out on top. As the Phillies try and continue their winning streak, they’ll send righty Aaron Nola to the mound on Wednesday. Nola is 4-1 in seven starts this year with a 3.32 ERA.

On the other side, righty Chris Bassitt will start for Toronto. Last time out against the Kansas City Royals, Bassitt allowed three runs on four hits in six innings of work.

The New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals play an afternoon game at Busch Stadium on Wednesday.

The end of a mid-week series often means mid-week afternoon baseball, and that’s exactly what fans will get at Busch Stadium on Wednesday. It’ll be a 1:15 p.m. ET first pitch, as the St. Louis Cardinals (15-21) wrap up their six-game homestand and three-game series with the New York Mets (18-18) with a getaway day game. Coming into this game the Mets are looking to pick up the series sweep after winning a pair of close games to begin the series on Monday and Tuesday.

In Game 1, the Mets picked up a 4-3 win by scoring a go-ahead run to break a tie in the seventh inning. That run came off a solo home run from Mets center fielder and leadoff hitter Brandon Nimmo.

That wasn’t all the damage Nimmo did for the Mets in this series. On Tuesday he homered again – this time delivering a three-run blast – that kicked off what ended up being a six-run fifth inning for the Mets that erased an early 3-0 deficit in an eventual 7-5 win.

Things will get tougher for the Mets lineup on Wednesday though. Righty Sonny Gray will take the hill for the Cardinals and brings in a 4-1 record with a 0.89 ERA. New York will start lefty Jose Quintana.

The Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Guardians wrap up their three-game American League Central series Wednesday afternoon at Progressive Field.

Wednesday tends to be “getaway day” in Major League Baseball, and that’s exactly the case for the Detroit Tigers (19-17) and Cleveland Guardians (23-13) this week. The two American League Central foes will wrap up their three-game series on Wednesday afternoon with a rubber match at Progressive Field. So far, there’s been one low scoring game and one high scoring game in this series. Monday’s game was the former – Cleveland opened the series with a 2-1 win, as the pitching staff allowed just six hits while piling up nine strikeouts. That game was tied 1-1 after one inning, before the Guardians scored the eventual winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

To wrap up this series, each team turns to a righty to make the start on Wednesday. Reese Olson will get the ball for the Tigers, while Tanner Bibee will start this one for the Guardians.

The team finished up ACC play with a series against Louisville in which it won the first two games, but dropped the final in an 11-4 defeat. Both wins were walk-offs which allowed the Eagles to not only secure a series victory, but a spot in the ACC tournament as they came into the final series in a tie for ninth with both Louisville and Syracuse.

The Orange barely edged out the Eagles for the eighth seed, also finishing regular season play with a conference record of 9-15. Syracuse capped the season off with a series victory against Florida State after winning the first game 4-3 and the third 13-5 in just five innings. The Orange have won ACC Tournament games two straight seasons in a row with a win against Louisville in 2022 and a win over Virginia in 2023. Each of Syracuse’s five pitchers have thrown at least 35 innings this season, so they should be primed for any games that are pushed to extra innings.

Syracuse is 14-20 all-time against Boston College. The Eagles took two of three in the series this season, sweeping the doubleheader by scores of 2-1 and 3-2, respectively.

Three Hoosiers are hitting .330 or better coming into tournament play as Taylor Minnick is hitting .374, Aly VanBrandt is hitting .364 and Brianna Copeland is at .337.

Do Premier League teams have it harder in European competition?

The finals of European club soccer’s three continental competitions will be set this week and there’s a strong chance there won’t be a single English team involved. There is no Premier League representation in the final four of either the Champions League and Europa League.

Aston Villa are the lone hope, and appear likely to exit the Europa Conference League semi-finals after losing the first leg at home to Olympiacos.

This is somewhat peculiar given the Premier League’s standing in club soccer. It is undeniably the strongest – and certainly the richest – league in the world. Manchester City won a Treble last season while West Ham won the Europa Conference League. The best managers work in the Premier League and, by and large, the best players play in the Premier League.

So what’s the explanation for the lack of English representation in the latter rounds of Europe’s continental competitions this season? Is it possible that the unmatched strength of the Premier League makes it harder for its teams to go the distance in European soccer? Do teams from Spain, Germany, Italy, France and the rest have an advantage?

Of the three teams left in the Champions League, Borussia Dortmund are the only ones with something still to play for in their domestic league. Ironically for the finalists, that’s a European spot. Paris Saint-Germain were already crowned Ligue 1 champions prior to their Champions League capitulation to Dortmund. The teams that will meet Dortmund in the final include Real Madrid, who have been crowned La Liga champions, and Bayern Munich, who lost their grip on the Bundesliga title race a long time ago.

When Real Madrid faced Manchester City in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final, Carlo Ancelotti had the freedom to rest several key players in the prior league fixture. Indeed, Brahim Diaz, Joselu and Nacho Fernandez all started against Mallorca three days before travelling to the Etihad Stadium.

City, on the other hand, had no such freedom and fielded a full-strength side against Luton Town because they couldn’t afford to take their foot off the pedal in a Premier League title race that is expected to go down to the final day of the season. Erling Haaland, Kevin de Bruyne and Ruben Dias all started that match.

It was a similar story for Arsenal who were denied the opportunity to rotate their squad before facing Bayern Munich in the final eight of this season’s Champions League. Of course, the Gunners are in the thick of a Premier League title race and had a tricky game against Aston Villa sandwiched in between the two legs against Bayern.

In the Europa League, Bayer Leverkusen have benefited from wrapping up the German title early by rotating their squad in between continental matches. Liverpool, on the other hand, didn’t have the same luxury as they suffered a quarter-final exit at the hands of Atalanta. West Ham also exited the competition before the semi-finals.

Aston Villa were firm favourites to go all the way in the Europa Conference League such is the strength of their squad, strong domestic form, and Unai Emery’s record in continental competition. But they face an almighty task to overturn a 4-2 deficit against Olympiacos away from home on Thursday. The Greek side are now expected to make the final.

Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp have long rallied against the number of domestic matches English teams have to play when compared to some of their counterparts around Europe. Most other countries don’t have a League Cup like England does. Bundesliga teams also play four fewer league games per season than Premier League sides.

However, the wealth of the Premier League should, in theory, allow its teams to build bigger, stronger squads to handle the number of matches they have to play. Manchester City, for example, were able to handle the absence of de Bruyne and Haaland earlier in the season when most other teams would have been crushed as a consequence.

Most likely, this season was merely an anomaly. City won the Champions League last season. There has been at least one English team in five of the last six Champions League finals while Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United have all made the Europa League final over the last five seasons. The rest of European soccer should enjoy having the place to themselves – it’s likely the Premier League cohort will be back at the top soon enough.

The Colorado Rockies look to avoid losing three in a row when they return home Tuesday to start a series against the San Francisco Giants.

The Colorado Rockies will be happy to get back home as they host the San Francisco Giants to start a three-game series on Tuesday. The Rockies lost five of their last six games against the Miami Marlins and Pittsburgh Pirates and now officially have the worst record in the National League at 8-26. It is the worst start to the season in franchise history.

Colorado finally did break a dubious streak over the weekend by winning wire-to-wire after experiencing a deficit at some point in their first 31 games. Colorado didn’t have that luck though in its last game, losing to the Pirates 5-3 in the series finale. Oneil Cruz hit a two-run homer in a four-run sixth inning to leapfrog the Rockies even though things were looking good for Colorado early, scoring three runs in the second. They could not score the rest of the way.
