The defending champion United States opens its quest for a second straight gold medal when it faces Switzerland at the Adirondack Bank Center in Utica, New York on Wednesday.

The United States, the defending women’s world champions, opens the 2024 IIHF Women’s World Championship at the Adirondack Bank Center in Utica, New York, on Wednesday night. The U.S. takes on Switzerland in a Group A matchup. Group A includes the top five finishers from last year’s tournament in Brampton, Ontario, and all five teams will advance to the knockout round. The Swiss lost the bronze medal game to Czechia and won their lone medal, a bronze, in 2012. The U.S. has medaled at all 22 world championships, taking 10 golds and 12 silvers since the tournament was launched in 1990 at Ottawa.

Coach John Wrobleski is back for the U.S. and captain Kendall Coyne Schofield of Minnesota in the PWHL returns to the roster after taking a year off. Hilary Knight, who plays for Boston’s PWHL entry, is after a record 14th medal at the worlds. Goalies Aerin Frankel (Boston) and Nicole Hensley (Minnesota) anchor the crease. Joy Dunne, 18, joins the roster after helping Ohio State to the national championship.

Switzerland’s one PWHL player, forward Alina Müller of Boston, anchors its first line and captain Lara Stalder from EV Zug in the Swiss league is the team’s other star. Coach Colin Muller is building on youth for this tournament, with only five of the 25 players on his roster born in the 1990s and three who appeared at the U-18 championships this year.

Canada, Czechia and Finland are the other teams in Group A, with Sweden, Japan, Germany, China and Denmark competing in Group B.
