Brewers look to snap losing skid as homestand continues against the Rays

Riding a season-long three-game losing skid, the Milwaukee Brewers turn to their ace Freddy Peralta (2-0, 3.18 ERA) tonight as they play host to the Tampa Bay Rays for the second of their three-game series inside American Family Field. Tampa Bay won game one of the series on Monday 1-0 as four pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout of the Brewers, but the Rays have not won consecutive games since winning three in a row from April 9-12 and have lost six of their last eight games including the first three games of their current six-game road trip to the White Sox over the weekend.

The Rays will start 29-year-old southpaw Tyler Alexander (1-0, 4.74 ERA) in his sixth outing since signing a one-year deal with Tampa Bay in November after spending his first five seasons in the majors with the Detroit Tigers. Alexander has struck out exactly four batters in each of his first five starts this season and comes into this game seven strikeouts away from 300 in his career.

Brewers catcher William Contreras ranks fourth in MLB with his team-leading .348 batting average and comes into this game with at least one hit in five of his last six games.

The Bruins look to eliminate the Maple Leafs on Tuesday night in Game 5 of their first-round series

The Boston Bruins host the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night in Game 5 of their first-round playoff series. The Bruins lead the series three games to one and can send the Maple Leafs packing with another win. The Bruins lost home-ice advantage when they fell in Game 2 by a score of 3-2, but they won both games in Toronto to take control of the series. Brad Marchand has led the way as he has a team-best three goals and five assists. He is one of four players who have scored multiple goals in the postseason.

The Maple Leafs will be looking to stave off elimination, but they may be without star Auston Matthews who is still battling an illness. He was able to play through it in Game 3 and part of Game 4, but was pulled in the third period and didn’t return.

“Of course, we’re hopeful that he’s available and feeling good and back to himself,” coach Sheldon Keefe said. “That’s what we’re hopeful for. But we’ve played well with guys out in the past. We started the series without [William Nylander] and had to deal with that. But we’ll see what tomorrow brings.”

The Leafs are still hopeful to have him back as they look to avoid being eliminated in the first round for the seventh time in the last eight years.

The Cubs go for their second straight win on Tuesday night when they take on the Mets

The Chicago Cubs go for a second straight win on Tuesday night when they visit the New York Mets. The Cubs came to New York on a two-game losing streak, but they got a Christopher Morel home run in the top of the ninth to steal a victory from the Mets. The Cubs didn’t have a hit through seven innings, but finally broke through in the eighth to tie the game and then took the lead on the home run in the ninth. The win pushed their record to 18-11 and moved them into first place in the NL Central. Tuesday they will look to clinch at least a series split when they send Javier Assad to the mound. Assad has been good so far this season as he is 2-0 with a 200 ERA.

The Toronto Blue Jays take on the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday in the middle game of their three-game set. The Blue Jays took the opener 6-5 for their second straight win and it got them back to .500 at 15-15 on the season. The Blue Jays had been struggling as they had lost five in a row, but they stole a win on Sunday against the Los Angeles Dodgers and then got a second straight on Monday. On Tuesday they will turn to Jose Berrios, who is pitching like an ace. Berrios comes into Tuesday 4-1 with a 1.23 ERA. The Blue Jays did lose his last start, but they had won his previous four.

Ottawa (9-7-6, 32 points) missed an opportunity to get closer to a Professional Women’s Hockey League playoff berth with a loss on Saturday. On Tuesday night, Ottawa visits New York (7-12-3, 20 points) at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. New York, already eliminated from playoff contention, is just 1-8-1 in its last 10 games and comes off a blowout loss on Long Island on Sunday afternoon. Brianne Jenner paces the Ottawa attack with nine goals and 19 points, the latter figure ranking fifth in the PWHL. Alex Carpenter of New York ranks third in the league with 21 points and goalie Corinne Schroeder owns the second-best save percentage in the PWHL at .931.

Ottawa ran into a hot goaltender on Saturday in a 2-0 loss to visiting Montreal, losing despite a late flurry that saw it fire 21 shots on goal in the third period. A mid-week matchup will take place on Tuesday as Lindenwood travels to play Missouri.

On Tuesday night, Missouri will welcome Lindenwood to Taylor Stadium for a mid-week, non-conference game as the regular season begins to wind down. A pair of struggling International League squads open a 6-game series on Tuesday night as the Lehigh Valley IronPigs visit the Worcester Red Sox

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (11-13) hit the road this week, visiting the Worcester Red Sox (11-15) at Polar Park on Tuesday night to open a six-game International League series. Lehigh Valley, the Triple-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies, dropped four of six last week to the visiting Charlotte Knights. The Red Sox, affiliated with the Boston Red Sox, return home after losing four of six on the road to the Toledo Mud Hens. The IronPigs boast the lone Top 100 prospect in the series, according to MLB Pipeline, in 22-year-old right-hander Mick Abel, ranked No. 45. The Phillies selected him 15th overall out of high school in 2020.

Wyatt Worthington II is still in the lead as the second round finishes and the third round commences on Tuesday.

The PGA Professional Championship will finish off the second round that was suspended due to darkness and attempt to complete round three here on Tuesday at the Fields Ranch East and West golf courses in Frisco, Texas. As of suspended play, Wyatt Worthington II from Reynoldsburg, Ohio, was still in the lead of the pack despite only getting four holes into his second round. Ben Pollard of Jackson, Wyoming, follows him after shooting a 68 and 71 in the first two rounds. Switzerland (1-2-0, 3 points) takes on Sweden (1-1-1, 4 points) on the final day of Group B play at Trio Arena in Vantaa, Finland, Tuesday. The winner clinches a berth in the knockout stage while the loser will have to await the outcome of the Kazakhstan vs. Canada matchup later in the day. The Kazakhs have two points in the standings and could jump past the loser between the Swiss and the Swedes with an unlikely victory against the powerful Canadian squad. Both teams hold head-to-head victories over Kazakhstan, however, and would advance if a tiebreaker becomes necessary. The Swiss and Swedes each come off losses on Sunday.

Goalie Love Harenstam has an .884 save percentage and 2.60 goals-against average. Koerbler’s two goals paces Switzerland while Glan Meier tops the squad with a goal and three points.

The Mutua Madrid Open moves into the quarterfinals for the WTA with Iga Swiatek in action today.

The women’s singles draw is into the quarterfinals of the 2024 Mutua Madrid Open with the top-ranked player in the draw in action today. Iga Swiatek is challenged by 11th seeded Beatriz Haddad Maia for the first slot in the semifinals on the line. Then in the second quarterfinal of the day eighth-seeded Ons Jabeur takes on 18th-seeded Madison Keys. The winners of those two matches will advance to the semifinals to face each other on Thursday this week. Over in the men’s singles draw all eight of the round of 16 matches will be played with seven matches featuring a top 10 seeded player and in the eighth, the legend Rafael Nadal will look to advance to the quarterfinals.
