Last-second Latvia looks to remain unbeaten in Group B play when it faces Kazakhstan at Ostrava Arena in Czechia on Tuesday

Latvia (2-0-0, 4 points), coming off its first-ever IIHF World Championships medal in 2023, takes on Kazakhstan (1-1-0, 3 points) on Tuesday in a Group B matchup from Ostrava Arena in Czechia. The Latvians opened the tournament with consecutive overtime victories while the Kazakhs come off a lopsided loss. Latvia, serving as the event’s co-host along with Finland last year, finished third in its group before upsetting Sweden and the United States to take a stunning bronze medal. Kazakhstan’s high-water mark in IIHF World Championships play came with a 10th-place finish in 2021 and it placed 11th a year ago.

Daugaviņš, who plays for Dukla Michalovce in Slovakia, leads Latvia with three goals and five points while Ābols, from Sweden’s Rögle BK, found the twine twice thus far in the tournament. Elvis Merzļikins of the Columbus Blue Jackets has done all the work in net thus far. Five different players have single goals for Kazakhstan while Samat Daniyar of Kazakh club Barys Astana leads the team with three points, all assists.

Queen Creek looks for a breakthrough after reaching the Arizona 6A championship game as it takes on Phoenix powerhouse Xavier Prep on Monday

Queen Creek (27-4) broke through on Wednesday after two straight losses in the Arizona 6A tournament semifinals. On Monday night at the Farrington Stadium on the campus of Arizona State University in Tempe, the Bulldogs — the No. 3 seed in the tournament — take on fourth-seeded Xavier Prep (27-4-1) from Phoenix for the state championship. The Gators returned to the championship game after winning the title in both 2021 and 2022. Queen Creek reached the state tournament by winning the 6A Central crown with a 9-1 record and comes into the championship game with 13 consecutive victories. Xavier Prep has won its last seven games and tied with Basha for the 6A Premier title at 7-1.

The state championship in AIA 5A softball is down to top-seeded Desert Mountain (32-4) and third-seeded Canyon View (29-3) to crown the top team this season. The Boston Red Sox host their AL East rivals the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday to start a four-game series. This will be the first time these two play this season. The Red Sox are going for their third win in a row after a win in their last series over the weekend against the Washington Nationals. This came after a three-game losing streak. Boston won the rubber match against Washington beating the Nationals on Sunday 3-2. The Red Sox scored all of their runs in the second inning. It was highlighted by Ceddanne Rafaela who hit a two-run double capitalizing on an error that should have been a routine fly ball by Nationals’ center fielder Victor Robles. Washington scored all of their runs soon after in the fourth inning but the Red Sox bullpen shut it down the rest of the way. Boston will try to keep it rolling with righty Kutter Crawford who is having a great start to the season with a 2-1 record and a 1.75 ERA. The Red Sox are the slight -120 favorites in the opener tonight.

Tampa Bay is coming off a series loss to the New York Yankees at home over the weekend. The Rays lost the rubber match on Sunday 10-6. Luis Gil stifled Tampa’s bats going six scoreless innings against the Rays to get the win. These NL East rivals face off for the first time this season when the New York Mets host the Philadelphia Phillies starting Monday. The Phillies are leading the division by two games and are coming off a series win against the Miami Marlins. The Phillies were one inning away from the series sweep but lost 7-6 in the finale in 10 innings. That happened when Emmanuel Rivera hit a walk-off RBI single when he came into the game as a pinch hitter. Philly will be the slight favorite to bounce back tonight with a -120 line in their favor. The Phillies will start lefty Cristopher Sanchez. He is 2-3 with a 3.22 ERA. He has been great at home but this will be a particular challenge because Sanchez is 0-2 with a 5.84 ERA on the road.

The Rangers look to put away the Hurricanes when the two teams hit the ice on Monday night

The New York Rangers battle the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday night in Game 5 of their second-round series. The Rangers won the first three games, but failed to eliminate the Hurricanes in Game 4 as they lost 4-3. The Rangers had battled back from a two-goal deficit to tie the game, but the Hurricanes scored with just over three minutes left in the game to force a Game 5. It was the first loss in the playoffs for the Rangers who had already swept the Washington Capitals in the first round. Monday they will look to finally put away the Hurricanes and earn a berth in the Eastern Conference Finals.

The Hurricanes, though, are looking to stay alive and force a Game 6 back in Carolina on Thursday.

The Hurricanes finally got the first win on Saturday after losing Games 2 and 3 in overtime. It has been a close series that could have gone either way and the Hurricanes are hoping the win on Saturday will turn things around for them.

They got off to a hot start in Game 4 as they scored three times in the first period, but then were shut out for the next 41 minutes before Brady Skjei finally netted the winner late in the third period.

The Chicago Cubs continue their six-game road trip on Monday when they take on the Atlanta Braves. The Cubs took two of three from the Pittsburgh Pirates to open the trip and will now look to get a second straight win on Monday against the Braves. The Cubs now sit at 24-17 on the season and a half game back of the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the NL Central. Monday they will send Shota Imanaga to the mound. Imanaga has been great in his first season in the MLB as he is 5-0 with a 1.08 ERA. The Cubs have won all seven of his starts this season as he has given up just five combined earned runs in his outings.

The scene shifts to the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota, on Monday night as Toronto visits Minnesota for Game 3 of their Professional Women’s Hockey League semifinal series. Toronto looks to finish a sweep with a win on Monday after blanking Minnesota twice at Coca-Cola Coliseum in Toronto last week. Toronto earned the top seed for the postseason after finishing 17-7-0 during the regular season, amassing 47 points to finish six points ahead of Montreal. Minnesota spent much of the season in contention for the title before a disastrous 0-5-0 finish after returning from the international break in mid-April, ending with a 12-9-3 mark and 35 points. Toronto opted to play Minnesota, the fourth seed, in the semifinals.

The Baltimore Orioles welcome the Toronto Blue Jays to town on Monday for the opener of a three-game set. The Orioles are in the midst of a nine-game home stand that started with them taking two of three from the Arizona Diamondbacks over the weekend. They won the first two games, but couldn’t complete the sweep as they lost 9-2 on Sunday. The Orioles now sit at 26-13 on the season and in first place in the AL East.
