In the semifinals the Pioneers cruised to a 19-7 win over fourth-seeded Villanova showcasing their dominance overall in the sport this season. The Huskies edged third-seeded Georgetown with a low-scoring 13-11 win to earn their way into the championship match.

During the regular season these teams played just one time with the Pioneers taking care of business. That was a part of the team’s current 11-game winning streak where they have been as dominant as any team in the country in women’s college lacrosse down the stretch of the regular season.

The Pioneers won 18-9 at home after jumping out early to a 6-4 lead in the first quarter and a 10-6 lead at the half. The real separation came in the third where the Pioneers piled on the Huskies with a 7-1 quarter to seal the win and give them the momentum heading into this championship match today.

UCLA takes on California in a Pac-12 rivalry match in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament today.

The third quarterfinal of the day in the 2024 NCAA Tournament of beach volleyball puts two teams that are very familiar with one another across the net. Second-seeded UCLA (33-6) looks to get back the championship for the fifth time in the last six tournaments against Pac-12 rivals, seventh-seeded California (22-13). This season these teams have played twice during the regular season and avoided each other in the conference tournament. Now one of their seasons will come to an end at the hands of their rivals while the other moves on to play in the semifinals. The winner of this match will take on the winner of third-seeded Stanford and 11th-seeded LSU to see which team will come out of the bottom half of the bracket.

In the first round the Bruins cruised to a 3-0 win over 15th-seeded Texas A&M-Corpus Christi while the Golden Bears closed out 10th-seeded Long Beach State (3-1) needing one more set to get the job done.

During the regular season the Bruins swept the two matches against the Golden Bears. They won the first 4-1 during the Battle for LA tournament in March and then the second 4-1 as well in April during the Pac-12 North Invitational. Another win would vault the Bruins into the semifinals for the opportunity to play for the program’s third National Championship.

The Bruins won the National Championship in back-to-back seasons in 2018 and 2019. Since then they have been the runner-up (2021 and 2023) in two of the last three tournaments building one of the best programs in the country.

Marko Martinjak squares off with Kevin Greenwood for the vacant BKB world light heavyweight title on Saturday in London

Marko Martinjak (8-2-0, 8 KOs) faces Kevin Greenwood (2-0-1, 2 KOs) for the vacant Bare Knuckle Boxing world light heavyweight title in the main event at BKB 38 at the Indigo at the O2 in London. Martinjak comes off a trilogy of fights with Jarome Hatch, winning the final two, including a first-round TKO on Jan. 18 in Pembroke Pines, Florida. Greenwood, meanwhile, took the victory on Jan. 27 at BKB 36 at the Indigo at the O2 when Erik Majda retired after the second round. Saturday’s title bout is set for seven two-minute rounds. Martinjak held the BKB world cruiserweight belt after his first victory over Hatch on June 25 at the Indigo at the O2.

A pair of fights scheduled for five two-minute rounds precede the main event. Bantamweights Liam Rees (2-0-0, 1 KO) takes on Tony Lafferty (6-5-0, 2 KOs) in the first. In bouts scheduled for three two-minute rounds, Aaron Sinclair (2-1-0, 1 KO) takes on Dan Gittens (2-0-0, 2 KO) in the welterweight division. Also in the welterweight class are Ionel Levitchi (5-2-0, 4 KO) and Tony Shields (1-0-0, 1 KO) along with Patrick Nash (0-3-1) against Danny Fletcher (0-1-0).

Alabama and Auburn will conclude regular season play on Saturday in their SEC series finale.

On Saturday afternoon, No. 16 Alabama take on in-state rival Auburn in the teams’ SEC series finale at Jane B. Moore Field to close out regular season play ahead of the conference tournament next week. The Tigers come into Saturday’s game with an overall record of 26-18-1 and a conference record of 8-15. The team picked up a narrow 4-3 victory over the Crimson Tide in the opening game, but dropped game two in a tough 2-0 defeat that went 11 innings on Friday night. Icess Tresvik and Axe Milanowski each recorded two hits for the Tigers, but the team was unable to bring those runs home. Maddie Penta took the loss in the circle for Auburn with 4.2 innings of work in which she gave up two earned runs and struck out four batters.

With Friday night’s win, the Crimson Tide improved to 33-15 overall on the season and 10-13 in conference play. Big Ten baseball play continues Saturday with game two between Rutgers and Maryland.

On Saturday afternoon, Maryland and Rutgers will meet for the second game of their Big Ten series at Bainton Field. The Scarlet Knights come into Saturday’s game with an overall record of 25-20, but have struggled in conference play so far and are in 12th place in the Big Ten with a record of 3-13. In the series opener on Friday, Rutgers fell to Maryland in a tough 4-3 defeat. Ty Doucette opened the scoring for the Scarlet Knights with an RBI single in the first, but the Terps came back with four straight runs in the sixth to take the lead. In the seventh, Doucette hit an RBI double to bring the team within one, but Rutgers was unable to find the tying run and was forced to take the loss. Justin Sinibaldi dropped to 4-3 on the season after suffering the loss on the mound with five innings of work in which he struck out two batters.

The Birmingham Stallions try to stay undefeated as they kick off Week 6 of the 2024 UFL season against the Memphis Showboats on Saturday afternoon.

As the second half of the 2024 UFL season gets underway, there’s only one undefeated team left in the league. That’s the two-time defending USFL Champion Birmingham Stallions (5-0), who are continuing their dominance in their new league. Last week was another dominant effort for the Stallions, as they beat the Houston Roughnecks 32-9 at Rice Stadium. That kind of defensive effort isn’t out of the ordinary for this team, as the Stallions are allowing a league-low 13.6 points per game in 2024. They’ll try to keep that up on Saturday afternoon when they visit the Memphis Showboats (1-4) at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium to kick off Week 6 of the season.

These teams have already played once this season, back in Week 3. Birmingham won that game 33-14, putting up 424 yards of offense. Quarterback Adrian Martinez completed 18 of his 28 pass attempts for 334 yards, with two touchdowns and no interceptions.

Despite what he termed a “terrible” qualifying session, three-time defending Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull claimed the pole position for Saturday’s Sprint ahead of the Miami Grand Prix. Verstappen starts on the front row alongside Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who finished 0.108 seconds slower in Friday’s qualifying session. Sergio Pérez of Red Bull starts third alongside RB Honda’s Daniel Ricciardo, with Carlos Sainz of Ferrari and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri making up the third row. The Miami Grand Prix, in its third year on the F1 calendar, plays host to a Sprint race for the first time on Saturday ahead of qualifying for Sunday’s Grand Prix.

Verstappen won the first Sprint of the season in China two weeks ago. The short race entails 19 laps around the 3.363-mile temporary street course that winds around Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, covering roughly 62 miles. The Sprint affords drivers an opportunity for extra points. The winner receives eight championship points down to a single point for eighth place.

With his Sprint-Grand Prix double in Shanghai, Verstappen collected 33 of a possible 34 points to extend his lead in the driver standings to 25 points over Pérez. Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin picked up the other point for recording the fastest lap en route to a seventh-place finish.

Leclerc stands third in the championship through five starts, 34 points behind Verstappen, with Sainz and McLaren’s Lando Norris rounding out the top five.

The championship match of the MAAC Tournament gives top-seeded Sacred Heart (12-4) the opportunity to finish out the season as the top team overall. This season the Pioneers finished the regular season as the best team in the conference, earned the number one seed and took care of business in the semifinals. The final step in that journey is third-seeded Manhattan (8-8), who had to win two matches to get to the championship today. One of those wins came against the second-seeded team in the tournament to earn this opportunity. It all comes down to one final match between the Pioneers and the Jaspers for the MAAC college lacrosse championship today.

In the semifinals, the Pioneers won a hard-fought match with fifth-seeded Siena 15-13 to earn its spot in the championship match. The Jaspers won a much slower, defensive-oriented match against second-seeded LIU after a 14-13 win over sixth-seeded Quinnipiac in the first round.

During the regular season these teams played just once with the Pioneers coming out on top. In that match the Pioneers won 14-12 with the teams going back-and-forth through the first three quarters. It all came down to the final quarter where the Pioneers closed out the match on a 4-0 run to secure the win.

If this is anything like that match, the championship of the MAAC Tournament in college lacrosse has all the makings to be the match of the year between two teams both talented enough to win the championship.

Florida State takes on Cal Poly in the second quarterfinal of the 2024 NCAA Tournament of beach volleyball today.

The second quarterfinal of the day in the NCAA Tournament of beach volleyball features fifth-seeded Cal Poly (30-6) taking on fourth-seeded Florida State (31-7). The Seminoles are looking to get over the hump after finishing as the runner-up in this tournament three times, most recently in 2022. That starts here in the quarterfinals against a very good Mustangs team that has never played for the championship in beach volleyball. Heading into the quarterfinals only two of the eight teams reside outside of the state of California putting the pressure on the Seminoles to navigate through this tournament loaded with teams that live on the beach year-round.

Just under a month ago the teams played with the Seminoles coming out with a 3-2 win on the road. In that match the teams went to a third game in three of the five sets, setting the stage for this to be an epic and exciting match with a spot in the semifinals on the line. This season the Seminoles have played 11 matches against teams from across the country in California. In those matches they are 4-7 overall, going undefeated against every other team in the country this season. For the Mustangs, they look to build on a win in the first round against 12th seeded Arizona State (3-0) to kick off the tournament. That was one of the teams most complete matches of the year at the right time of the year heading into the NCAA Tournament.

Canada looks to return to the gold-medal game for the first time since 2021 when it takes on Sweden on Saturday in Espoo, Finland

Canada (5-0-0) advanced to the semifinals of the 2024 IIHF U-18 World Championships with a shutout victory on Thursday. On Saturday at Metro Arena in Espoo, Finland, the Canadians take on upstart Sweden (3-1-1), which stunned host Finland in Thursday’s quarterfinals. The game is a rematch of an April 25 contest in Group B play in which Canada topped the Swedes 6-3 on the opening day of the tournament. Sweden finished third in Group B, losing a head-to-head tiebreaker with Czechia, which was eliminated by Slovakia on Thursday. Canada finished first in Group B, outscoring its opponents 31-7 in the process.

Sweden lost last year’s gold-medal game to the United States while Canada won the bronze. The winner faces the U.S.-Slovakia winner for the gold medal on Sunday while the losers meet for the bronze medal earlier in the day Sunday.

Host Switzerland and Wales battle for 3rd place at the European Team Championships in Zurich on Saturday morning

Switzerland, the host for this year’s European Team Championships, looks to repeat its third-place finish from last year at Helsinki as it takes on Wales in the third-place match in Zurich on Saturday morning. The Swiss finished 2-1 in Pool B before they were swept 3-0 in their semifinal matchup with three-time defending champion England on Friday. The Welsh placed second in Pool A before falling to France on Friday in their semifinal. The Switzerland vs. Wales battle pits the same two teams as last year in the third-place match.
