The Patriot League’s twin powers collide for the conference tournament title and an automatic NCAA tourney bid as Navy visits Loyola Maryland

No. 7 Loyola Maryland (16-2) rolled to a 9-0 record in Patriot League play. On Saturday, the Greyhounds host 20th-ranked Navy (15-3) in the Patriot Lague tournament championship game at Loyola’s Ridley Athletic Complex in Baltimore. The Midshipmen finished 8-1 in Patriot League play and come into Saturday’s matchup with nine consecutive victories. The Greyhounds have won their last three after a non-conference loss at then-No. 14 Penn on April 17. Loyola hunts for its third straight NCAA tournament bid and second consecutive conference tourney title. Navy last played in the NCAA tourney in 2019 and reached its lone Final Four in 2017. The Greyhounds boast seven Final Four trips, but none since 2003.

Navy earned a bye to the tournament semifinals and clubbed fourth-seeded Holy Cross 19-5 on Thursday in Baltimore. Tori DiCarlo netted two of her four goals in the first period as the Middies broke out to a 5-1 lead before erupting for eight goals in the second quarter. Emily Messinese also scored four goals.

Loyola blanked sixth-seeded Lehigh 18-0 in its semifinal on Thursday after the Mountain Hawks upset third-seeded Army on the road in overtime in the quarterfinal. Lauren Spence made eight saves to record the shutout while Sydni Black scored five goals and Georgia Latch added four.

Black owns a team-high 96 points for the Greyhounds, including 69 goals. Chase Boyle leads the squad with 76 tallies and Latch checks in with 56. Messinese paces Navy with 63 goals and 81 points with DiCarlo adding 58 goals. Loyola won the regular-season meeting 17-12 at home on March 20.

Atletico Madrid looks to solidify Champions League spot in search of first win at Mallorca since 2019

Winners of three of their last four matches, Atletico Madrid comes into today’s La Liga match three points clear of Athletic Club for the fourth and final qualification spot into next year’s UEFA Champions League as it visits Estadi Mallorca Son Moix in search of a win in Mallorca for the first time in five years. Despite being winless since March, Mallorca has collected points in four of its last seven games and is six points above the relegation line with five matches to play. Atletico Madrid won the first meeting between the clubs this season 1-0 behind a 64th-minute goal from Antoine Griezmann.

The first semifinal of the college beach volleyball NCAA Tournament sends the first team to the championship today.

The NCAA Tournament in college beach volleyball is a major test of athleticism and stamina for teams with not only quarterfinal matches today, but also the semifinals. In this first semifinal match the winner of top-seeded USC and eighth-seeded LMU will take on the winner of the fourth-seeded Florida State and fifth-seeded Cal Poly. Both of those matches are in progress with the semifinals here just on the horizon. For the Lions and Mustangs, they are both looking for not only the program’s first championship in college beach volleyball, but their first appearances in the championship match. The Seminoles and especially the Trojans are conditioned to making long runs here.

Since this tournament began back in 2016 the Trojans have played in six of the seven championship matches. They won the first two, lost in 2019 and since that loss have won back-to-back-to-back championships in search of a fourth in a row this year.

The Seminoles lost in the championship match three times in 2016 to the Trojans, in 2018 to UCLA and again in 2022 to the Trojans. Those two teams will look to navigate upsets in the quarterfinals to play in what could be a highly emotional and skilled semifinal match here today.

On the other side of the bracket the semifinals will be built through quarterfinal matches between third-seeded Stanford vs. 11th-seeded LSU and the second-seeded Bruins vs. seventh-seeded California. There will potentially be three Pac-12 schools in the semifinals of the 2024 NCAA Tournament of college beach volleyball.

The ARCA Menards Series heads to Kansas Speedway for the Tide 150 today.

The fifth race on the schedule this season in the ARCA Menards Series sends the drivers to Kansas for the Tide 150 at Kansas Speedway. This season has been all about parity after last season dominated by Jesse Love. With Love driving for NASCAR this season, there have been four different winning drivers through four races. Gus Dean, Jake Finch, William Sawalich and Connor Zilisch have each won a race to start the season, but have not participated in enough overall races to have their wins make an impact in the points standings. Andres Perez de Lara is the current points leader with four top-12 finishes and getting better as the season progresses.

Perez has 143 points this season, one more than the driver behind him finishing 12, eight, eight and fifth. He has a lot of work to do to hold off the field, but the ARCA Menards Series has shifted from a series with two contenders and one dominating driver to a field built on parity.

Behind Perez in the standings are Greg Van Alst (142 points), Christian Rose (130 points), Amber Balcaen (125 points) and Kris Wright (118 points) rounding out the top five on the leaderboard so far this season. 

So far this season only 11 total drivers have participated in all four races. Rookies Lavar Scott (116 points), Caleb Costner (94 points) and Michael Maples (90 points) are all looking for their first wins this season with Scott coming off a fourth-place finish in the last race to build confidence and momentum heading into today.

Dumke Family Softball Stadium is set to host the exciting weekend matchup between home side Utah and visiting program Washington on Saturday in college softball regular season action. Utah’s recent stretch of nine wins in 11 games has been fueled in large part by their rookie shortstop, Shonty Passi. Over those last 11 contests, no Ute has posted a better average than Passi’s .515 clip and seven of her 17 hits have gone for extra bases. That total includes her first collegiate home run, which came against Baylor on April 24. Passi blasted another round-tripper on April 28 to help the Utes top Oregon State and her efforts led to her being named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week.

Passi’s been part of a Utah lineup that’s hit .332 during their 9-2 run and she’s one of six players who hit better than .300 over that span.

Seashole Pressly Stadium is set to host the exciting weekend matchup between home side Florida and visiting program Texas A&M on Saturday in college softball regular season action. The three-game series, which will conclude the regular season campaign, begins on Friday and ends on Sunday. The Gators (40-12, 14-7 SEC) enter the weekend slate of games against the Aggies (39-9, 15-6 SEC) ranked third in the conference standings just one game behind TAMU, who currently sits in second just one game behind SEC leader Tennessee. UF’s offense is primed for the matchup with Texas A&M after it posted the most runs ever in program history against No. 12 Florida State during its midweek 15-13 (9) extra-inning win. The previous record for runs scored against the Seminoles was 14 runs in a win during the 2008 season.

Leading the way in the effort that snapped a six-game skid against FSU was junior outfielder Kendra Falby. Falby tallied a career-high five hits, tied her career mark with four RBI and belted her first home run of the season, which was the game-winner, en route to the victory.

The Cardinals came away with a win in the first game of the series yesterday in a shutout 3-0. Sonny Gray was credited with the win going 7.0 scoreless innings allowing just three hits and six strikeouts with one walk. Nolan Arenado hit an RBI double in the bottom of the first to open scoring early scoring Paul Goldschmidt and Willson Contreras. Arenado was credited with all three runs on the night after hitting another RBI double that scored Contreras in the fifth inning of the game to go up 3-0. Chicago will look to bounce back here tonight and even the series at one each.

The Boston Red Sox will take the field again at Target Field for the second game of a three-game series on Saturday afternoon in Minneapolis taking on the Minnesota Twins. The hometown Twins came away with the win in the first game of the series last night 5-2. It was all Minnesota all game and it started in the third inning with second baseman Edouard Julien scoring Willi Castro on an RBI single. It wasn’t until the seventh when more runs started flying in. Castro sacrificed and scored Austin Martin on a throwing error followed by Julien walking and scoring Castro again. Ryan Jeffers then hit a two-run RBI double that took the score to 5-0 heading into the eighth inning. Rafael Devers got the Red Sox’s first runs of the game on a two-run RBI double in the top of the eighth inning, but no one else could find rhythm.

The top two teams during the regular season in the American Athletic Conference, No. 9 Florida (16-2) takes on No. 18 James Madison (13-4) at the Vandy Lax Complex in Nashville for the conference tournament title. The winner also earns an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Both the Gators and Dukes earned semifinal victories on Thursday to set up a rematch of their April 13 showdown in Gainesville, won by host Florida. The Gators finished 6-0 in the American while James Madison went 5-1. Florida owns a run of 12 straight NCAA tourney bids and reached the Final Four in 2012. The Dukes, meanwhile, have eight straight NCAA tourney appearance, winning their lone national title in 2018.

Minnesota, winless since the international break, looks to finally clinch a playoff berth when it visits New York on Saturday afternoon

Minnesota (12-8-3, 35 points) takes it down to the wire, closing its regular season on Saturday against New York (8-12-3, 23 points) at UBS Arena on Long Island. Minnesota appeared to be comfortably in the playoffs when the Professional Women’s Hockey League broke for the world championships in March. Since returning, Minnesota dropped four straight games and hasn’t earned a single point. The SailGP Racing series heads to Bermuda for another test for the best sailors in the world today.

The first day of action for the Bermuda Sail Grand Prix sets the stage for a great weekend of action on the mysterious island. After more than a month off the teams get back in the water to try and capture a key win this season with only three more events left on the calendar to close out the fourth season in this series. The series shifts from Australia and New Zealand to the tiny island of Bermuda in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of the United States. The final three events left on the calendar circle the United States from Halifax to New York and closing out the season in San Francisco.

It has been a full month since the teams and boats were in the water, but New Zealand is coming off a win in a home race back in late March heading into this race. That race had a big impact on the standings for New Zealand and the rest of the field.

New Zealand is at the top of the standings this season with 68 points as they start to do what they seem to do every season – pull away from the rest of the field. As the season goes on team New Zealand gets better and better with Peter Burling looking to add another trophy to the case.

In a high-powered Bedlam clash, No. 4 Oklahoma State looks to clinch its 3-game series at No. 2 Oklahoma with a Saturday win

No. 4 Oklahoma State (43-8) drew to within one game of the Big 12 Conference lead, winning its first road game at Oklahoma (45-5) in 27 years on Friday. That dropped the second-ranked Sooners into a tie with Texas for first place in the conference at 21-4, with the Cowgirls at 20-5 lurking in third place after their ninth consecutive victory. Oklahoma State’s streak of consecutive NCAA tournament appearances stands at seven and it has played in the last four Women’s College World Series. The Sooners haven’t missed the NCAA tourney since receiving their first bid in 1994 and are the three-time defending national champions.

Jake Knapp leads the field by one stroke entering the third round of the CJ Cup Byron Nelson today.

The CJ Cup Byron Nelson Tournament heads into the weekend for the third round with 66 golfers remaining in the field. At the top of that list with a one-stroke lead is Jake Knapp (-14) after back-to-back rounds of 64 to start the tournament. He has two golfers behind him tied at -13 overall in Troy Merritt and Matt Wallace, so there will be no time to rest on the first two round laurels and a lot of work to do for Knapp as the third round tees off today. Knapp has played the best golf of his career this season with his first win on the PGA Tour and top 10 finishes three times to rise up to 25th in the FedEx Cup Standings early in the season.

Through the first two rounds of play, Knapp has 15 birdies and one bogey on his card. In the first round he had a clean scorecard with seven birdies, following that up with another strong round yesterday to build a small lead heading into the weekend.

Merritt was on his game in the second round with a 62 built on eight birdies, an eagle and one bogey to shoot up the leaderboard. He was especially great on the front nine holes with four birdies and the eagle closing out the round with all of the momentum. Wallace has been steady all tournament with eight birdies in the first round followed by four birdies, an eagle and a bogey in the second.

Also in the mix today are Kelly Kraft (-12), Davis Riley (-11), Taylor Pendrith (-11), Keith Mitchell (-11), Ben Kohles (-11) and a quartet of golfers tied at -10 overall that are all within shouting distance of the leaders.

Stanford takes on LSU in the final quarterfinal of the 2024 NCAA Tournament of beach volleyball today.

The final quarterfinal of the day features third-seeded Stanford (32-5) and 11th-seeded LSU (26-11) both looking to punch a ticket to the semifinals. In the first round, the Tigers pulled off their first upset of the tournament to get to the quarterfinals today. They will need three more upsets to earn the school’s first championship in college beach volleyball as not only the lowest seed in the event, but the only double-digit seed left in the field. The Tigers fell short in the CCSA Tournament, but have the opportunity to be the final team standing from the conference in the NCAA Tournament this season. The Cardinal with a win could be one of three teams in the semifinals from the vaunted Pac-12 this season.

The winner of this match will move on to play in the semifinals against the winner of second-seeded UCLA and seventh-seeded California. This side of the bracket is down to three Pac-12 schools, three California schools and the Tigers who are looking to crash the party.

In the first round of the tournament, the Cardinal cruised to a win over 14th-seeded Georgia State winning 3-0 to advance while the Tigers needed a five-set match against sixth-seeded TCU to earn their way with a 3-2 win in the first round.

These teams played once earlier in the season during the Death Valley Invitational. The Cardinal ultimately won that tournament defeating three of four teams that ultimately ended up in the NCAA Tournament. Against the Tigers in particular, the Cardinal swept their five-set match, but needed two three-match wins along the way in a much more competitive match than the 5-0 final score indicated.

Casey Mize and the Detroit Tigers will take the mound against Clarke Schmidt and the New York Yankees on Saturday afternoon.

The Detroit Tigers will take the field again at Yankee Stadium on Saturday afternoon in the second game of a three-game series against the New York Yankees in the Bronx. The hometown Yankees took the first game of the series with a score of 2-1 last night. Dennis Santana won game No. 2 on the season after pitching a scoreless ninth inning. In an evenly matched game, the first run was scored in the top of the sixth innings with an RBI walk from Tigers second baseman Colt Keith who scored Riley Greene. Detroit held that one-run lead heading into the bottom of the ninth inning when New York needed a miracle. Giancarlo Stanton provided the game-tying RBI with a double to right, scoring Aaron Judge. Just one batter later, Anthony Rizzo hit the game-winning RBI single that scored Alex Verdugo in walk-off fashion.

The third quarterfinal of the day in the 2024 NCAA Tournament of beach volleyball puts two teams that are very familiar with one another across the net. Second-seeded UCLA (33-6) looks to get back the championship for the fifth time in the last six tournaments against Pac-12 rivals, seventh-seeded California (22-13). This season these teams have played twice during the regular season and avoided each other in the conference tournament. Now one of their seasons will come to an end at the hands of their rivals while the other moves on to play in the semifinals. The winner of this match will take on the winner of third-seeded Stanford and 11th-seeded LSU to see which team will come out of the bottom half of the bracket.

In the first round the Bruins cruised to a 3-0 win over 15th-seeded Texas A&M-Corpus Christi while the Golden Bears closed out 10th-seeded Long Beach State (3-1) needing one more set to get the job done.

During the regular season the Bruins swept the two matches against the Golden Bears. They won the first 4-1 during the Battle for LA tournament in March and then the second 4-1 as well in April during the Pac-12 North Invitational. Another win would vault the Bruins into the semifinals for the opportunity to play for the program’s third National Championship.

The Bruins won the National Championship in back-to-back seasons in 2018 and 2019. Since then they have been the runner-up (2021 and 2023) in two of the last three tournaments building one of the best programs in the country.

Alabama and Auburn will conclude regular season play on Saturday in their SEC series finale.

On Saturday afternoon, No. 16 Alabama take on in-state rival Auburn in the teams’ SEC series finale at Jane B. Moore Field to close out regular season play ahead of the conference tournament next week. The Tigers come into Saturday’s game with an overall record of 26-18-1 and a conference record of 8-15. The team picked up a narrow 4-3 victory over the Crimson Tide in the opening game, but dropped game two in a tough 2-0 defeat that went 11 innings on Friday night. Icess Tresvik and Axe Milanowski each recorded two hits for the Tigers, but the team was unable to bring those runs home. On Saturday afternoon, Maryland and Rutgers will meet for the second game of their Big Ten series at Bainton Field. The Scarlet Knights come into Saturday’s game with an overall record of 25-20, but have struggled in conference play so far and are in 12th place in the Big Ten with a record of 3-13. In the series opener on Friday, Rutgers fell to Maryland in a tough 4-3 defeat. Ty Doucette opened the scoring for the Scarlet Knights with an RBI single in the first, but the Terps came back with four straight runs in the sixth to take the lead. In the seventh, Doucette hit an RBI double to bring the team within one, but Rutgers was unable to find the tying run and was forced to take the loss. Justin Sinibaldi dropped to 4-3 on the season after suffering the loss on the mound with five innings of work in which he struck out two batters.

The Birmingham Stallions try to stay undefeated as they kick off Week 6 of the 2024 UFL season against the Memphis Showboats on Saturday afternoon.

As the second half of the 2024 UFL season gets underway, there’s only one undefeated team left in the league. That’s the two-time defending USFL Champion Birmingham Stallions (5-0), who are continuing their dominance in their new league. Last week was another dominant effort for the Stallions, as they beat the Houston Roughnecks 32-9 at Rice Stadium. That kind of defensive effort isn’t out of the ordinary for this team, as the Stallions are allowing a league-low 13.6 points per game in 2024. Verstappen starts on the front row alongside Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who finished 0.108 seconds slower in Friday’s qualifying session. Sergio Pérez of Red Bull starts third alongside RB Honda’s Daniel Ricciardo, with Carlos Sainz of Ferrari and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri making up the third row. The Miami Grand Prix, in its third year on the F1 calendar, plays host to a Sprint race for the first time on Saturday ahead of qualifying for Sunday’s Grand Prix.

During the regular season these teams played just once with the Pioneers coming out on top. In that match the Pioneers won 14-12 with the teams going back-and-forth through the first three quarters. It all came down to the final quarter where the Pioneers closed out the match on a 4-0 run to secure the win.

If this is anything like that match, the championship of the MAAC Tournament in college lacrosse has all the makings to be the match of the year between two teams both talented enough to win the championship.

Florida State takes on Cal Poly in the second quarterfinal of the 2024 NCAA Tournament of beach volleyball today.

The second quarterfinal of the day in the NCAA Tournament of beach volleyball features fifth-seeded Cal Poly (30-6) taking on fourth-seeded Florida State (31-7). The Seminoles are looking to get over the hump after finishing as the runner-up in this tournament three times, most recently in 2022. That starts here in the quarterfinals against a very good Mustangs team that has never played for the championship in beach volleyball. Heading into the quarterfinals only two of the eight teams reside outside of the state of California putting the pressure on the Seminoles to navigate through this tournament loaded with teams that live on the beach year-round.

Canada (5-0-0) advanced to the semifinals of the 2024 IIHF U-18 World Championships with a shutout victory on Thursday. On Saturday at Metro Arena in Espoo, Finland, the Canadians take on upstart Sweden (3-1-1), which stunned host Finland in Thursday’s quarterfinals. The game is a rematch of an April 25 contest in Group B play in which Canada topped the Swedes 6-3 on the opening day of the tournament. Sweden finished third in Group B, losing a head-to-head tiebreaker with Czechia, which was eliminated by Slovakia on Thursday. Canada finished first in Group B, outscoring its opponents 31-7 in the process.

Canada scored twice in the first period en route to a 4-0 blanking of Latvia on Thursday. Maxim Masse scored 5:08 into the game and Ryder Ritchie lit the lamp at 12:12. Porter Martone and Jett Luchanko added goals in the third period and Carter George stopped 23 shots. Gavin McKenna leads Canada with six goals and 15 points, second overall in the tournament, while Martone notched five tallies and 14 points thus far.

Jack Berglund’s goal at 16:34 of the second period stood up as Sweden upset Finland 2-1 on Thursday. Alfons Freij got the Swedes on the board 2:40 into the game before Finland got the equalizer at 9:09 of the second. Love Harenstam made 21 saves in the win. Lucas Pettersson and Melvin Fernstrom share the team scoring lead for Sweden with two goals and six points each.

Sweden lost last year’s gold-medal game to the United States while Canada won the bronze. The winner faces the U.S.-Slovakia winner for the gold medal on Sunday while the losers meet for the bronze medal earlier in the day Sunday.
