Xander Schauffele sizzles with a 1st-round 64, enters Friday’s 2nd round ath the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte with a 3-shot lead
Xander Schauffele carded an eagle and a birdie in his final three holes on Thursday, forging a three-shot lead after a first-round 64 at the Wells Fargo Championship. Second-round play at Quail Hollow Country Club in Charlotte is set for Friday. Schauffele’s only blemish, a bogey at the par-4 18th to close his front nine, dropped him to four-under on the day after five birdies in a seven-hole stretch. Defending champion Wyndham Clark struggled to a two-over-par 73 a year after setting a tournament record at Quail Hollow with a 265. The Wells Fargo Championship enters its second straight season as a PGA Tour Signature Event, with 68 players in the field.

Collin Morikawa, Alex Norén and Rory McIlroy, the lone three-time winner of the event, stand three shots back at four-under after first-round 67s. A group of seven players shares fifth place, four shots behind, including Justin Thomas, Sungjae Im, Jason Day (the 2018 champion in Charlotte), Sepp Straka, Lee Hodges, Russell Henley and Taylor Moore.
The tournament dates to 2003. Besides McIlroy, the only other multiple-time winner is Max Homa, who took home the top prize in both 2019 and 2022. McIlroy’s victories came in 2010, 2015 and 2021.
As a Signature Event, the Wells Fargo Championship carries a $20 million purse, with the champion earning $3.6 million to go with 700 FedExCup points.
