ACC Tournament play will continue Friday afternoon with the second semifinal between Florida State and Georgia Tech.

The title game is just one win away for second-seeded Florida State and sixth-seeded Georgia Tech and the two teams will battle it out at Duke Softball Stadium on Friday night to claim the final spot in the championship. The Ramblin’ Wreck opened up tournament play on Thursday, upsetting third-seeded Virginia Tech in a 6-2 victory which was credited to Sophia Voyles in the circle after four innings of work in which she gave up one hit, one earned run and struck out two batters. Grace Connelly powered the Georgia Tech offense with a three-run homer in the top of the sixth to put the Ramblin’ Wreck up 5-1. The team posted one more run in the top of the seventh and although the Hokies brought one more run home, it wasn’t enough as Georgia Tech secured the win with strong defense to advance to the semifinals.

The Seminoles began their tournament journey on Thursday, as well, and played to a 2-0 victory against 10th-seeded Notre Dame to earn a spot in the semifinal round. The Fighting Irish held Florida State to just five hits, but Kalei Harding and Kennedy Harp made theirs count with solo home runs which won their team the game. Allison Royalty and Ashtyn Danley split pitching duties and only allowed four hits between the two of them. Each pitcher struck out one batter while the defensive work for the Seminoles kept the base-running contained.

The last time Georgia Tech and Florida State met was last year during regular season play and the Seminoles swept the Ramblin’ Wreck, outscoring them 23-5. The winner of today’s game will play either Clemson or Duke for the ACC Tournament title.

Big East Tournament play will continue on Friday for St. John’s and Creighton as they meet at Glay Field.

On Friday afternoon, fifth-seeded St. John’s will look to stay alive in Big East Tournament play with a win over third-seeded Creighton at Glay Field. The Red Storm dropped to the loser’s bracket after a close 5-4 loss to top-seeded Villanova in their second game of the tournament, but bounced back to beat sixth-seeded Butler in a big 12-2 victory in just five innings. Ana Serafinko led the St. John’s offense, going 2-for-3 with three RBI produced from a two-run homer and an RBI double. Loreley Francia pitched a complete game for the Red Storm, giving up five hits and striking out four batters in the win to keep her team’s tournament run alive.

The Bluejays opened tournament play on Wednesday with a game against Butler, as well, and earned a 4-2 win. The team’s second game resulted in a 3-1 loss to second-seeded UConn, however, and it will need a win today to avoid elimination. Against the Huskies, Sydney Potter brought in the team’s only run of the game with an RBI single in the second inning, but the scoring stopped there. Although the team produced six hits in the game, it struggled to bring runners home, stranding eight on base. Natalia Puchino was pegged with the loss after pitching six innings and striking out five batters.

When St. John’s and Creighton met during conference play this season, the Bluejays won the first two games of the series before falling in a big 10-0 shutout in the series finale.

Christian Eckes looks to become the first 2-time winner of the Buckle Up South Carolina 200 at Darlington Raceway, with qualifying on Friday

Raceday qualifying for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Buckle Up South Carolina 200 roars into action Friday afternoon at Darlington Raceway. The venerable track opened in 1950, with the current track configuration in place since 1953. Dubbed “the Track Too Tough to Tame,” the unique egg-shaped oval with the ends having very different configurations. Legend tells the situation arose from a minnow pond near one end of the track that the owner refused to relocate. The strange layout makes life difficult for crews to find a setup for their cars to handle effectively at both ends of the 1.366-mile track.

Christian Eckes took the checkered flag at Darlington last year under caution after 11 laps of overtime ahead of Stewart Friesen. Eckes led a race-high 82 laps, reclaiming the lead on Lap 131 and never relinquishing it. The 200.802-mile race covers 147 laps, with the first two stages encompassing 45 laps each.

Corey Heim rolled to his second victory of the season, winning at Kansas on Saturday to run his streak of consecutive top-10 finishes to all eight starts in 2024, the lone driver to do so. Heim joined Eckes and part-time driver Kyle Busch as two-time winners, with the other victories this season belonging to Nick Sanchez and Rajan Caruth.

Heim holds a seven-point lead over Eckes in the driver standings, with Sanchez 49 points behind. Ty Majeski (65 points behind), Tyler Ankrum (80 points), Caruth (84 points), Taylor Gray (85 points), Matt Crafton (122 points), Tanner Gray (143 points) and Grant Enfinger (152 points) round out the 10 drivers holding playoff spots at this point.

Schauffele’s only blemish, a bogey at the par-4 18th to close his front nine, dropped him to four-under on the day after five birdies in a seven-hole stretch. Defending champion Wyndham Clark struggled to a two-over-par 73 a year after setting a tournament record at Quail Hollow with a 265. The Wells Fargo Championship enters its second straight season as a PGA Tour Signature Event, with 68 players in the field.

The United States takes on Sweden on Friday in the first game of the IIHF World Championships

The IIHF World Championships begins on Friday and the United States will take on Sweden in the first game of Group B play. The Americans come into the tournament looking for better results after they have finished in fourth place in the last two championships. Last year they won Group A with 20 points but were shocked by Germany in the semifinals in overtime. They would then be upset again in the third-place game as Latvia beat them 4-3 in overtime. It was a disappointing end to a tournament that they had championship hopes for. It isn’t going to be easy in their first game as they take on a Swedish team that finished just behind them in the group standings last year. The Americans beat Sweden in overtime in their meeting last year.

Saleh Al-Amri, Paulo Ricardo (own goal) and Aymen Dahmen (own goal) all got on the scoresheet to secure all three points for Al-Ittihad. Dahmen put the ball past his own goalkeeper in the 96th minute of the match.

Duke will look to find its way to the ACC Tournament final with a win over Clemson on Friday afternoon.

Home field advantage is a real thing and top-seeded Duke is using every bit of it in ACC tournament play with the hopes of earning the title at Duke Softball Stadium. Before the Blue Devils can do that, however, they will need to make it past fifth-seeded Clemson on Friday afternoon in a semifinal matchup. The Tigers took on fourth-seeded Virginia yesterday in the quarterfinal round and pulled off a big 8-1 win to advance in tournament play. Alex Brown and Valerie Cagle each finished the game with three RBI while McKenzie Clark brought in two. Regan Spencer gave up just two hits in the circle, pitching a complete game and striking out three batters. The defensive support backing up Spencer was impeccable on Thursday and the team will look to bring that same play with the hopes of upsetting the top-seeded Blue Devils.

The Blue Devils bring a six-game win streak into Friday’s semifinal game with the most recent being a 2-0 win over ninth-seeded Boston College in the quarterfinal round after 10 innings of play. No. 17 Arizona and Utah play on Friday afternoon in a matchup of the two teams at the top of the Pac-12 standings.

Just two weeks out from the Pac-12 Tournament, there’s a potential championship matchup in conference play this weekend. On Friday afternoon, No. 17 Arizona (30-17, 17-7 Pac-12) takes on Utah (30-16-0, 15-9-0 Pac-12) at Smith’s Ballpark. Coming into the weekend the teams are in first place and second place respectively in the Pac-12 standings. They’re not the only ones contending for top seeds in the tournament either, with Utah a half a game up on Oregon State and one game up on Oregon. Big East Tournament play continues Friday afternoon as UConn and Villanova meet at Glay Field.

On Friday afternoon, second-seed UConn will take on top-seeded Villanova at Glay Field, but only one team can come out on top as they work toward a Big East tournament title. The Huskies have now won four straight games with their most recent being a 3-1 win over third-seeded Creighton in the second round of play on Thursday afternoon. In the second inning, Creighton took a 1-0 lead, but UConn’s Grace Jenkins hit a two-run homer to center field in the third to give the Huskies the lead. In the fourth, Kaitlyn Kibling hit an RBI fly out to center field to bring home the final run. Payton Kinney improved to 12-4 on the season, pitching six innings and striking out an impressive nine batters.

The Wildcats made it past their first game in tournament play, but only by a one-run margin in a narrow 5-4 victory. Lilly St. Jean opened the scoring with a ground out in the bottom of the fourth, but St. John’s countered with four runs in the top of the second to take the lead. It wasn’t until the bottom of the fifth when Villanova tied things up with a run coming home on a wild pitch, Elaina Wagner stealing home and St. Jean hitting an RBI double to left center. The game went to the eighth inning and the Wildcats secured the win with a walk-off double from Kelsey White to bring home Ava Franz. Caroline Pellicano earned the win in the circle with 2.1 innings of work in which she struck out two batters to keep the bases clear.

When UConn and Villanova met during regular season play, the Wildcats won the first and third games to secure the series victory.
