Bobby Hamilton remains the only two-time winner of the spring race at Darlington, which began in 2001 and was not run from 2005-09 or 2012-19. The race, scheduled for 147 laps, includes two stages of 45 turns around the track each, with the final stage covering 57 laps.

Last year’s race marked the longest in the history of the event, with 11 laps of overtime before Eckes took the checkered flag ahead of Stewart Friesen under the yellow caution flag.

Ten drivers qualify for the season-ending playoffs and four drivers hold victories for provisional spots in that field. Besides Heim and Eckes, Nick Sanchez and Rajah Caruth visited victory lane so far this season. All hold spots in the top 10 of the driver standings along with Ty Majeski, Tyler Ankrum, Taylor Gray, Matt Crafton, Tanner Gray and Grant Enfinger.

The Blue Jays and Twins open a weekend series at the Rogers Centre on Friday night.

With the two sides opening a three-game weekend series at the Rogers Centre, the Toronto Blue Jays host the Minnesota Twins in game one of the series on Friday night. Minnesota is trying to keep pace with the Guardians in a crowded AL Central with a 22-15 record this season, which is 1.5 games behind Cleveland for first place. The Chicago Cubs begin a six-game road trip on Friday when they take on the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cubs come into town looking to bounce back from a series loss to the San Diego Padres. The Cubs dropped the first game and then evened the series on Tuesday, but were shut out in the finale on Wednesday. They got just one hit in the loss and are now just 4-5 in their last nine games. Thursday they will send Jameson Taillon to the mound as they look to avoid a second straight loss and get a win in the opener. Taillon has been great for the Cubs this season. He has gone 3-0 with a 1.13 ERA in four starts. The Cubs have won all four of his starts and will be looking to extend that streak on Thursday.

The NASCAR Xfinity Series returns to action after a week off, heading to Darlington Raceway this weekend for the Crown Royal Purple Bag Project 200. Qualifying for the event goes off on Friday night at the “Track Too Tough to Tame,” a 1.366-mile asphalt ovals with vastly different configurations at each end of the egg-shaped track. Kyle Larson, a former NASCAR Cup Series champion, took the checkered flag last year, beating Justin Allgaier to the finish by 1.337 seconds. Ryan Truex comes to Darlington off a win two weeks ago in Dover, becoming the sixth driver on the Xfinity Series to secure a provisional playoff spot.

Mark Martin won the spring race five times, including three straight from 1993-95, while Denny Hamlin, Geoffrey Bodine and Matt Kenseth took the checkered flag three times each. Among active drivers on the series, Allgaier is the only multiple winner, taking the victories in 2021 and 2022.

Truex joined Chandler Smith, Austin Hill, rookie Jesse Love, Sam Mayer and Aric Almirola among the winner’s circle earning provisional spots in this fall’s 12-driver playoffs. Defending series champion Cole Custer and Chandler Smith lead the series with eight top-10 finishes in 10 starts.

Smith is a single point ahead of Custer in the driver standings. Hill is 17 points back, followed by Love (57 points behind), Allgaier (81 points), Riley Herbst (91 points), A.J. Allmendinger (99 points), Sheldon Creed (117 points) and Parker Kligerman (133 points). Though outside the top 12, Mayer, Truex and Almirola stand next in line for playoff berths.

Western Carolina hosts its final SoCon series of the season when Mercer visits to open a 3-game series at Hennon Stadium on Friday night

Mercer (26-22) looks to make a late push in the Southern Conference standings when it opens a three-game road series at Western Carolina (23-23) at Hennon Stadium in Cullowhee, North Carolina, on Friday night. The Bears, at 5-9 in SoCon play, stand in sixth place, two-and-a-half games behind the fifth-place Catamounts, who have lost five straight games. Mercer last played in the NCAA tournament in 2019, never advancing beyond regional play in four appearances. Western Carolina, meanwhile, owns 12 NCAA tourney bids, most recently appearing in 2016 and also never moving past the regionals. All eight teams in the SoCon receive entry into the conference tournament, which opens May 22 in Greenville, South Carolina.

Eighth-seeded Indiana takes on fourth-seeded Nebraska in the first semifinal of the Big Ten Softball Tournament on Friday afternoon. The Hoosiers are coming off a huge upset of regular season champion Northwestern on Thursday and will be looking to do it again on Friday to make the finals. The Hoosiers had to play in the first round on Wednesday and they eliminated rival Purdue. Thursday they had a much tougher test in the Wildcats, but they scored four straight runs over the fourth through sixth innings to get the upset win. They had lost two of three to the Wildcats during the regular season but got the best of them on Thursday to move on to the semifinals. They now get a Cornhuskers team that they did not play during the regular season.

The Cornhuskers had a bye through the first round and had little trouble with Minnesota in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

They had just played the Golden Gophers in the last series of the year and had won two of three. They got another win on Thursday as they erased an early 1-0 deficit to score the next seven runs.

They would give up a run in the top of the fifth, but four runs in the bottom of the inning would end it as they came away with an 11-2 win.

ACC Tournament play will continue Friday afternoon with the second semifinal between Florida State and Georgia Tech.

The title game is just one win away for second-seeded Florida State and sixth-seeded Georgia Tech and the two teams will battle it out at Duke Softball Stadium on Friday night to claim the final spot in the championship. The Ramblin’ Wreck opened up tournament play on Thursday, upsetting third-seeded Virginia Tech in a 6-2 victory which was credited to Sophia Voyles in the circle after four innings of work in which she gave up one hit, one earned run and struck out two batters. Grace Connelly powered the Georgia Tech offense with a three-run homer in the top of the sixth to put the Ramblin’ Wreck up 5-1. The team posted one more run in the top of the seventh and although the Hokies brought one more run home, it wasn’t enough as Georgia Tech secured the win with strong defense to advance to the semifinals.

The last time Georgia Tech and Florida State met was last year during regular season play and the Seminoles swept the Ramblin’ Wreck, outscoring them 23-5. The winner of today’s game will play either Clemson or Duke for the ACC Tournament title.

Big East Tournament play will continue on Friday for St. John’s and Creighton as they meet at Glay Field.

On Friday afternoon, fifth-seeded St. John’s will look to stay alive in Big East Tournament play with a win over third-seeded Creighton at Glay Field. The Red Storm dropped to the loser’s bracket after a close 5-4 loss to top-seeded Villanova in their second game of the tournament, but bounced back to beat sixth-seeded Butler in a big 12-2 victory in just five innings. Ana Serafinko led the St. John’s offense, going 2-for-3 with three RBI produced from a two-run homer and an RBI double. Loreley Francia pitched a complete game for the Red Storm, giving up five hits and striking out four batters in the win to keep her team’s tournament run alive.

Legend tells the situation arose from a minnow pond near one end of the track that the owner refused to relocate. The strange layout makes life difficult for crews to find a setup for their cars to handle effectively at both ends of the 1.366-mile track.

The United States takes on Sweden on Friday in the first game of the IIHF World Championships

The IIHF World Championships begins on Friday and the United States will take on Sweden in the first game of Group B play. The Americans come into the tournament looking for better results after they have finished in fourth place in the last two championships. Last year they won Group A with 20 points but were shocked by Germany in the semifinals in overtime. They would then be upset again in the third-place game as Latvia beat them 4-3 in overtime. It was a disappointing end to a tournament that they had championship hopes for. It isn’t going to be easy in their first game as they take on a Swedish team that finished just behind them in the group standings last year. The Americans beat Sweden in overtime in their meeting last year.

Al-Ittihad hosts Al-Ettifaq FC on Friday in Saudi Pro League action.

King Abdullah Sports City is set to host the exciting matchup between home side Al-Ittihad and visiting club Al-Ettifaq FC on Friday in Saudi Pro League action. The hosts head into the meeting as the fifth-placed team in the Saudi top-flight standings with 50 points in 30 matches so far this season, courtesy of an overall record of 15 wins, five draws and 10 losses. The club will be looking to snap a two-match losing streak, which dates back to its dramatic 3-2 finish over Al-Hazm on April 20 at King Abdullah Sports City. Saleh Al-Amri, Paulo Ricardo (own goal) and Aymen Dahmen (own goal) all got on the scoresheet to secure all three points for Al-Ittihad. Dahmen put the ball past his own goalkeeper in the 96th minute of the match.

Then, Al-Ittihad lost 2-1 to Al-Hilal in the King Cup of Champions semifinals on April 30, where Hamdallah scored the club’s lone goal again.

Finally, in its most recent outing, Al-Ittihad fell in a 3-1 finish against Abha last Friday at Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz Stadium.

Duke will look to find its way to the ACC Tournament final with a win over Clemson on Friday afternoon.

Home field advantage is a real thing and top-seeded Duke is using every bit of it in ACC tournament play with the hopes of earning the title at Duke Softball Stadium. Before the Blue Devils can do that, however, they will need to make it past fifth-seeded Clemson on Friday afternoon in a semifinal matchup. The Tigers took on fourth-seeded Virginia yesterday in the quarterfinal round and pulled off a big 8-1 win to advance in tournament play. Alex Brown and Valerie Cagle each finished the game with three RBI while McKenzie Clark brought in two. Regan Spencer gave up just two hits in the circle, pitching a complete game and striking out three batters. The defensive support backing up Spencer was impeccable on Thursday and the team will look to bring that same play with the hopes of upsetting the top-seeded Blue Devils.

The Blue Devils bring a six-game win streak into Friday’s semifinal game with the most recent being a 2-0 win over ninth-seeded Boston College in the quarterfinal round after 10 innings of play. Jala Wright pitched the entire game, throwing 167 pitches and giving up just five hits while striking out 17 batters, a single-game program record. Aminah Vega emerged as the hero in the bottom of the 10th, however, smashing a two-run, walk-off homer to propel the Blue Devils into the semifinal round.

When Duke and Clemson met in their ACC series last month, the Blue Devils pulled off the sweep, outscoring the Tigers 23-13 over the three games. The winner of this game will go on to play either Florida State or Virginia Tech in the ACC Tournament Championship.

No. 17 Arizona and Utah play on Friday afternoon in a matchup of the two teams at the top of the Pac-12 standings.

Just two weeks out from the Pac-12 Tournament, there’s a potential championship matchup in conference play this weekend. On Friday afternoon, No. 17 Arizona (30-17, 17-7 Pac-12) takes on Utah (30-16-0, 15-9-0 Pac-12) at Smith’s Ballpark. Coming into the weekend the teams are in first place and second place respectively in the Pac-12 standings. They’re not the only ones contending for top seeds in the tournament either, with Utah a half a game up on Oregon State and one game up on Oregon. This weekend’s games will be important in deciding the ultimate seeding of the tournament.

Arizona comes into this series rolling. The Wildcats have won five games in a row. Last weekend, they were at home and swept Stanford in three games. Then on Tuesday they beat in-state rival Arizona State 5-3.

Utah was on the road last weekend, and won one game in the three-game series against No. 24 Oregon. Then on Tuesday the Utes lost 11-8 to Utah Tech. Two weeks ago, Utah swept UCLA in their most recent home games.

Big East Tournament play continues Friday afternoon as UConn and Villanova meet at Glay Field.

On Friday afternoon, second-seed UConn will take on top-seeded Villanova at Glay Field, but only one team can come out on top as they work toward a Big East tournament title. The Huskies have now won four straight games with their most recent being a 3-1 win over third-seeded Creighton in the second round of play on Thursday afternoon. In the second inning, Creighton took a 1-0 lead, but UConn’s Grace Jenkins hit a two-run homer to center field in the third to give the Huskies the lead. In the fourth, Kaitlyn Kibling hit an RBI fly out to center field to bring home the final run. Payton Kinney improved to 12-4 on the season, pitching six innings and striking out an impressive nine batters.

The Wildcats made it past their first game in tournament play, but only by a one-run margin in a narrow 5-4 victory. Lilly St. Jean opened the scoring with a ground out in the bottom of the fourth, but St. John’s countered with four runs in the top of the second to take the lead. It wasn’t until the bottom of the fifth when Villanova tied things up with a run coming home on a wild pitch, Elaina Wagner stealing home and St. Jean hitting an RBI double to left center. The game went to the eighth inning and the Wildcats secured the win with a walk-off double from Kelsey White to bring home Ava Franz. Caroline Pellicano earned the win in the circle with 2.1 innings of work in which she struck out two batters to keep the bases clear.

When UConn and Villanova met during regular season play, the Wildcats won the first and third games to secure the series victory.
