Playoff-bound Omaha Supernovas visit postseason-hopeful Columbus Fury at Nationwide Arena on Saturday night

The Omaha Supernovas (13-7) already clinched a postseason berth in the inaugural season of the Pro Volleyball Federation and on Saturday night, they travel to Nationwide Arena to visit the Columbus Fury (8-12). The Supernovas, with four matches remaining on their schedule, are the likely No. 2 seed for the PVF Championship, set for May 15 and 18 at CHI Health Center in Omaha. Columbus, meanwhile, also has four matches left and trails the Grand Rapids Rise and San Diego Mojo by a game-and-a-half for the final two playoff spots. The Supernovas punched their postseason ticket on Thursday night when the Fury lost at the regular-season champion Atlanta Vibe.

Omaha last played on April 26, outlasting the visiting Rise 3-2 (25-22, 23-25, 25-20, 16-25, 15-7). Stephanie Samedy hammered home 21 kills to go with 18 digs while Brooke Nuneviller added 20 kills to go with five blocks. Bethania De La Cruz served up both of the Supernovas’ aces in the match, with Sydney Hilley also recording 18 digs and 56 assists.

Columbus went down in straight sets 3-0 (21-25, 19-25, 18-25) at Atlanta on Thursday night. Reagan Cooper notched 15 kills to go with seven digs, Kendall Kipp recorded a pair of blocks and Tori Springer set up 17 assists.

The Supernovas and Fury have split their first two meetings this season, each winning at home. Columbus took a 3-1 victory on Feb. 21 and Omaha responded with a 3-1 win on April 4. The teams will meet a final time at Omaha on Thursday.

The Seattle Mariners look to tie this series up on Saturday in Game 2 against the Houston Astros.

The Houston Astros are out of the last spot in the AL West and go for their third win in a row for a series win against the Seattle Mariners on Saturday night. After a five-game losing streak, Houston has now won five of its last six games. That includes a 5-3 win in the opener over the Mariners on Friday. This is the first series of the season between these two division rivals. The Astros were down 3-1 before scoring four in the seventh inning. The inning was highlighted by Jose Altuve who had the go-ahead RBI bunt single. As if that wasn’t enough, Altuve scored after collecting his 300th steal of his career. Seattle is still at the top of the division standings but they will be trying to avoid losing three in a row tonight.

Houston is the -140 favorite in Game 2 to take this series. This is going to be a great pitching matchup in primetime on FOX. Framber Valdez will go for the home team. The crafty lefty is 1-0 with a 2.60 ERA. Logan Gilbert will go for the Mariners with the righty sporting a 2-0 record with a 2.03 ERA. The Orioles aim to remain hot as the road trip continues against the Reds

Having lost seven of their last 11 games, the Cincinnati Reds have fallen to .500 for the first time since mid-April as tonight they play host to the Baltimore Orioles for the second game of their three-game weekend interleague series inside Great American Ball Park. The Orioles have won four of their last five games including last night’s series opener 3-0 behind a Ryan O’Hearn two-run home run capping off a three-run seventh inning as four Baltimore pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout of the Reds. Tonight the Reds turn to young southpaw Andrew Abbott (1-3, 3.27 ERA) who has two losses in his last three starts and has allowed four home runs in those three outings.

The Orioles will start veteran left-hander John Means who will make his 2024 debut after missing most of last season due to Tommy John surgery after he was activated from Triple-A Norfolk where he made six starts this season. Means, a 12-game winner in 2019, is 9-15 in his last four seasons and was left off Baltimore’s playoff roster because of elbow soreness.

Adley Rutschman leads Baltimore hitting .308 this season and comes into tonight with at least one base hit in 13 of his last 14 games. The 26-year-old switch-hitting catcher hit .327 with four home runs and 16 RBIs in April.

Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz had both of Cincinnati’s hits last night and has a hit in five consecutive games with two doubles, two stolen bases, and a home run in that span.

 In each of the last two seasons, Baltimore won the first game of their three-game series against Cincinnati, but the Reds have won the final two games on both occasions.

The Redbirds go for their fourth straight win on Saturday night when they take on the Knights

The Memphis Redbirds take on the Charlotte Knights on Saturday night looking to win a fourth straight game. The Redbirds came to town on Tuesday and dropped the opener 4-3 for their second straight loss, but they have bounced back to win the last three games and earn at least a series split. The winning streak has got them back to .500 on the season at 15-15 and has them in fifth place in the International League West. They sit a half-game back of the Iowa Cubs and are looking to move in front of them with another win on Saturday night.

The Gwinnett Stripers look to win their second straight game on Saturday night when they host the Durham Bulls. The Stripers evened the series on Friday when they picked up a 5-4 win. The Stripers came into the series on a three-game losing streak, but they won the opener on Wednesday in the first game of a doubleheader. They then lost the nightcap of the doubleheader and lost again on Thursday. They bounced back with a win on Friday and now sit at 14-16 on the season. The Beavers bring an overall record of 20-27 and a conference record of 8-14 into Saturday’s contest which puts them in eighth place in the Pac-12 standings. Oregon State is on a two-game losing streak after dropping last night’s series opener to Cal in a 9-0 loss in just five innings. Sarah Haendiges took the loss in the circle after giving up five earned runs in four innings of work. Oregon State was held to just three hits in the loss which came from Savanah Whatley, Grace Messmer and Eliana Gottlieb.

The Golden Bears are right above the Beavers in the Pac-12 standings and are currently 8-12 against conference opponents and 35-15 overall. Last night’s victory was led by Tianna Bell and Elon Butler as they each went 3-for-3 at the plate. The NASCAR Cup Series heads to Kansas Speedway for the AdventHealth 400 starting with qualifying today.

Qualifying for the NASCAR Cup Series AdventHealth 400 gets started in Kansas City, Kansas and the Kansas Speedway. This weekend is the 12th race on the schedule this season and the second to last race before All-Star Weekend for NASCAR. This is also a preview for all the drivers for the playoffs. Kansas Speedway will play host to the fourth race of the playoffs, the first in the round of 12. The track is 1.5 miles of asphalt testing the drivers across 267 laps. Last season the Kansas Speedway hosted two races much like it will this season, with the same slot in the regular season and a playoff race. In those races William Byron and Christopher Bell qualified for pole position to start each.

Kyle Larson performed consistently as well as anyone in those two races leading the most laps in both. In the end Denny Hamlin and Tyler Reddick came away with the checkered flags making them two of the favorites to come away with the win this weekend starting with qualifying today.

Heading into this weekend Larson leads the NASCAR Cup Series with 410 points with five top five finishes including one win. He is just ahead of Martin Truex Jr. (395 points), Chase Elliott (377 points), Hamlin (361 points) and Reddick (354 points) to make up the top five heading into the halfway point of the season.

Hamlin is in a great position starting with qualifying today to pick up his series leading fourth win this season and climb up even higher in the points standings. He is one of the favorites heading into the weekend for the 2024 AdventHealth 400.

The San Diego Mojo visit the Grand Rapids Rise on Saturday with both teams locked in a tight race for the final two playoff spots

The San Diego Mojo (9-10) and Grand Rapids Rise (10-11) enter Saturday night’s matchup at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids locked in a virtual tie for third place in the Pro Volleyball Federation. That puts both teams a game and a half ahead of the Columbus Fury for the final two playoff spots, with the Vegas Thrill and Orlando Valkyries still holding an outside chance of a postseason berth. San Diego is 4-2 over its last six matches while the Rise comes in off consecutive defeats. The Mojo still have five matches left on their schedule while Grand Rapids stands with three remaining.

San Diego outlasted visiting Orlando on Monday in a 3-2 (25-18, 19-25, 25-15, 18-25, 15-11) victory. Willow Johnson contributed 17 kills for the Mojo while Kendra Dahlke made four blocks. Alison Bastianelli logged three of the team’s five aces, Shara Marie Venegas Medina booked 16 digs and Nootsara Tomkom set up 29 assists.

On Sunday, the Rise were swept in straight sets 3-0 (21-25, 15-25, 15-25) at Columbus. Erika Pritchard powered what offense Grand Rapids had with 12 kills and three blocks, Camila Gomez made 10 digs and Ashley Evans popped up 21 assists.

The Mojo won both of the matches at home against Grand Rapids, taking a 3-1 victory on Feb. 23 and a 3-2 win on March 4. The teams will play again at Van Andel Arena on Sunday.

UCLA takes on Long Beach State in the men’s NCAA Volleyball championship on Saturday afternoon

It all comes down to two on Saturday afternoon as UCLA takes on Long Beach State in the NCAA Men’s Volleyball Championship match. The Bruins are the top seed in the tournament and the Beach come in as the second seed. Both teams swept through their quarterfinal match, but needed five sets to win in the semifinals. The Bruins got by UC Irvine in the fifth set 15-12 after dropping the fourth. The Beach erased a two-set deficit to win the last three and eliminate Grand Canyon. The Beach lost the first two sets 26-24 and 28-26 in close battles, but didn’t let it detour them as they swept through the last three and won the fifth set 15-10 to advance to the title match.

The Beach took home the first meeting by winning the last three sets after they dropped the first one 25-22.

The Bruins would even the season series the very next day in four sets. They would win the first set 29-27, but lost the second set 29-27. They shook off the set loss and took the last three.

The two teams are evenly matched and it should make for a great championship match on Saturday afternoon.

The Athletics go for their sixth straight win on Saturday afternoon when they take on the Marlins

The Oakland Athletics look to stay hot on Saturday when they take on the Miami Marlins in the second game of their three-game series. The Athletics took the opener 3-1 on Friday for their fifth straight win and seventh in the last eight. They have moved to within a game of .500 on the season at 16-17 and can even their record for the first time this season. They will send Paul Blackburn to the mound as they try and get that win. Blackburn has been great this season for the A’s and comes into the game 2-1 with a 3.34 ERA. The A’s have won five of his six starts this season.

They have struggled in conference play this season and have yet to win a series in the ACC. Saturday they will look to finally get their first with another win.

The Rockies have not had a good start to the season, but they will be looking to start to turn things around on Saturday when they send Austin Gomber to the mound. The second semifinal of the 2024 NCAA Tournament in college beach volleyball sets the table for the championship match today.

The NCAA Tournament for college beach volleyball has a full slate of matches on the schedule starting with four quarterfinals matches and then two more in the semifinals. With those quarterfinals still in progress, the semifinals are still up in the air. For the second semifinal it will be a match-up between the winner of third-seeded Stanford vs. 11th seeded LSU and second-seeded UCLA and seventh-seeded California. Three of those teams come from the pool of Pac-12 schools that have been as good as any in the country this season and over the years since beach volleyball was added to the schedule.

For the Bruins, they are looking to get back to the championship match for the third time in four years. They are one of two teams to win the NCAA Tournament in beach volleyball with wins in 2018 and 2019, finishing as the runner-up in 2021 and 2023.

The Cardinal, Tigers and Golden Bears are all looking to not only get to the championship match for the first time, but earn their first national championship in college beach volleyball this season. 

The winner of this match will advance to the championship to play one of top-seeded USC, fourth-seeded Florida State or fifth-seeded Cal Poly. The Trojans, the five time champions and defending back-to-back-to-back champions in this tournament have already advanced to the semifinals with the Seminoles and Mustangs still playing their quarterfinal match. With the Trojans and Bruins on opposite sides of the bracket they could be on a collision course for fourth championship dual in five seasons.

The second round of the 2024 Insperity Invitational tees off with Y.E. Yang in the lead today.

Heading into the second round of the 2024 Insperity Invitational Y.E. Yang holds a one-stroke lead over the field. He enters this round at seven under par, two strokes ahead of Thongchai Jaidee and the rest of the field. Behind them are five golfers tied at three under par looking to play catch up and move up the leaderboard here in the second round. The first round went incomplete due to the weather conditions with every golfer in the field finishing up the first round and starting the second round today. That sets up a full day of golf ahead for the best golfers on the PGA Champions Tour today.

Yang was able to get through 14 holes to build his lead before the weather turned yesterday in round one. He finished with a clean scorecard through those 14 holes with seven birdies. Six of those came on the back nine holes where Yang found a rhythm and played those nine holes as well as any in his career.

Jaidee was able to play through 12 holes shooting five under par with five birdies and zero bogeys on his card. He has two more holes to play catchup with Yang and contend heading into the second round today and the final round tomorrow, weather permitting.

The five-way tie at three under par features Steven Alker, the two-time defending champion at this event, Mike Weir, Charlie Wi, Darren Clarke, Scott Dunlap and Tim O’Neal all looking to close the gap with Jaidee and Yang. All of those golfers will play out between four and 10 holes picking up where they left off yesterday heading into the second round today.

UNLV goes for its fourth straight win on Saturday when it takes on San Diego State in Mountain West action

UNLV wraps up its regular season on Saturday looking to pick up a sweep over San Diego State. The Rebels took the opener on Thursday 5-1 and then held off an Aztec rally on Friday to get a 4-3 victory. The Rebels scored two in the first and two more in the third to take a four-run lead in the second game. They would allow three runs in the top of the seventh, but got the last out with a runner on third to get their third straight win. The Rebels now sit at 31-16 overall and 14-7 in the Mountain West. Saturday will be the last regular season game for both teams and the winner will win the regular season Mountain West title and get the first seed in the conference tournament.

The hosts head into the meeting having been able to secure a total of 56 points in 31 matches so far in the French top-flight campaign, courtesy of an overall record of 16 wins, eight draws and seven losses. In the club’s most recent outing, Stade Brestois is coming off of a thrilling 5-4 victory over Stade Rennais last Sunday at Roazhon Park. Steve Mounie, Warmed Omari (own goal), Martín Satriano, Mahdi Camara and Lilian Brassier all found the back of the net to secure all three points for the club from Brest away from home. Brassier scored the game-winner in the 96th minute of the match.

The Patriot League’s twin powers collide for the conference tournament title and an automatic NCAA tourney bid as Navy visits Loyola Maryland

No. 7 Loyola Maryland (16-2) rolled to a 9-0 record in Patriot League play. On Saturday, the Greyhounds host 20th-ranked Navy (15-3) in the Patriot Lague tournament championship game at Loyola’s Ridley Athletic Complex in Baltimore. The Midshipmen finished 8-1 in Patriot League play and come into Saturday’s matchup with nine consecutive victories. The Greyhounds have won their last three after a non-conference loss at then-No. 14 Penn on April 17. Loyola hunts for its third straight NCAA tournament bid and second consecutive conference tourney title. Navy last played in the NCAA tourney in 2019 and reached its lone Final Four in 2017. The Greyhounds boast seven Final Four trips, but none since 2003.

Navy earned a bye to the tournament semifinals and clubbed fourth-seeded Holy Cross 19-5 on Thursday in Baltimore. Tori DiCarlo netted two of her four goals in the first period as the Middies broke out to a 5-1 lead before erupting for eight goals in the second quarter. Emily Messinese also scored four goals.

Loyola blanked sixth-seeded Lehigh 18-0 in its semifinal on Thursday after the Mountain Hawks upset third-seeded Army on the road in overtime in the quarterfinal. Lauren Spence made eight saves to record the shutout while Sydni Black scored five goals and Georgia Latch added four.

Atletico Madrid looks to solidify Champions League spot in search of first win at Mallorca since 2019

Winners of three of their last four matches, Atletico Madrid comes into today’s La Liga match three points clear of Athletic Club for the fourth and final qualification spot into next year’s UEFA Champions League as it visits Estadi Mallorca Son Moix in search of a win in Mallorca for the first time in five years. Despite being winless since March, Mallorca has collected points in four of its last seven games and is six points above the relegation line with five matches to play. Atletico Madrid won the first meeting between the clubs this season 1-0 behind a 64th-minute goal from Antoine Griezmann.

The first semifinal of the college beach volleyball NCAA Tournament sends the first team to the championship today.

The NCAA Tournament in college beach volleyball is a major test of athleticism and stamina for teams with not only quarterfinal matches today, but also the semifinals. In this first semifinal match the winner of top-seeded USC and eighth-seeded LMU will take on the winner of the fourth-seeded Florida State and fifth-seeded Cal Poly. Both of those matches are in progress with the semifinals here just on the horizon. For the Lions and Mustangs, they are both looking for not only the program’s first championship in college beach volleyball, but their first appearances in the championship match. The Seminoles and especially the Trojans are conditioned to making long runs here.

Since this tournament began back in 2016 the Trojans have played in six of the seven championship matches. They won the first two, lost in 2019 and since that loss have won back-to-back-to-back championships in search of a fourth in a row this year.

The Seminoles lost in the championship match three times in 2016 to the Trojans, in 2018 to UCLA and again in 2022 to the Trojans. Those two teams will look to navigate upsets in the quarterfinals to play in what could be a highly emotional and skilled semifinal match here today.

On the other side of the bracket the semifinals will be built through quarterfinal matches between third-seeded Stanford vs. 11th-seeded LSU and the second-seeded Bruins vs. seventh-seeded California. There will potentially be three Pac-12 schools in the semifinals of the 2024 NCAA Tournament of college beach volleyball.

The ARCA Menards Series heads to Kansas Speedway for the Tide 150 today.

The fifth race on the schedule this season in the ARCA Menards Series sends the drivers to Kansas for the Tide 150 at Kansas Speedway. This season has been all about parity after last season dominated by Jesse Love. With Love driving for NASCAR this season, there have been four different winning drivers through four races. Gus Dean, Jake Finch, William Sawalich and Connor Zilisch have each won a race to start the season, but have not participated in enough overall races to have their wins make an impact in the points standings. Andres Perez de Lara is the current points leader with four top-12 finishes and getting better as the season progresses.

Perez has 143 points this season, one more than the driver behind him finishing 12, eight, eight and fifth. He has a lot of work to do to hold off the field, but the ARCA Menards Series has shifted from a series with two contenders and one dominating driver to a field built on parity.

Behind Perez in the standings are Greg Van Alst (142 points), Christian Rose (130 points), Amber Balcaen (125 points) and Kris Wright (118 points) rounding out the top five on the leaderboard so far this season. 

So far this season only 11 total drivers have participated in all four races. Rookies Lavar Scott (116 points), Caleb Costner (94 points) and Michael Maples (90 points) are all looking for their first wins this season with Scott coming off a fourth-place finish in the last race to build confidence and momentum heading into today.

Utah hosts Washington on Saturday in college softball action.

Dumke Family Softball Stadium is set to host the exciting weekend matchup between home side Utah and visiting program Washington on Saturday in college softball regular season action. Utah’s recent stretch of nine wins in 11 games has been fueled in large part by their rookie shortstop, Shonty Passi. Over those last 11 contests, no Ute has posted a better average than Passi’s .515 clip and seven of her 17 hits have gone for extra bases. That total includes her first collegiate home run, which came against Baylor on April 24. Passi blasted another round-tripper on April 28 to help the Utes top Oregon State and her efforts led to her being named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week.

Passi’s been part of a Utah lineup that’s hit .332 during their 9-2 run and she’s one of six players who hit better than .300 over that span.

Seashole Pressly Stadium is set to host the exciting weekend matchup between home side Florida and visiting program Texas A&M on Saturday in college softball regular season action. The three-game series, which will conclude the regular season campaign, begins on Friday and ends on Sunday. The Gators (40-12, 14-7 SEC) enter the weekend slate of games against the Aggies (39-9, 15-6 SEC) ranked third in the conference standings just one game behind TAMU, who currently sits in second just one game behind SEC leader Tennessee. UF’s offense is primed for the matchup with Texas A&M after it posted the most runs ever in program history against No. 12 Florida State during its midweek 15-13 (9) extra-inning win. The previous record for runs scored against the Seminoles was 14 runs in a win during the 2008 season.

Leading the way in the effort that snapped a six-game skid against FSU was junior outfielder Kendra Falby. Falby tallied a career-high five hits, tied her career mark with four RBI and belted her first home run of the season, which was the game-winner, en route to the victory.

In addition to Falby’s historic night in Tallahassee, Fla., junior Reagan Walsh was tabbed this week’s SEC Player of the Week after a successful string of games last week against FSU and Georgia.

Dail Softball Stadium is set to host the exciting weekend matchup between home side NC State and visiting program Pittsburgh on Saturday in college softball regular season action. The Pack will be looking to secure their second series win of the 2024 campaign. Furthermore, a series win would mark the team’s first ACC series win since the Pack swept Boston College in 2023. Finally, it would be NC State’s third series win over the Panthers in program history. This weekend’s series marks the eighth series against Pitt. The two programs split the last 10 meetings, with the Panthers winning the last three.

The Chicago White Sox will take the field again at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri, on Saturday afternoon for the second game of a three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals came away with a win in the first game of the series yesterday in a shutout 3-0. Sonny Gray was credited with the win going 7.0 scoreless innings allowing just three hits and six strikeouts with one walk. Nolan Arenado hit an RBI double in the bottom of the first to open scoring early scoring Paul Goldschmidt and Willson Contreras. Arenado was credited with all three runs on the night after hitting another RBI double that scored Contreras in the fifth inning of the game to go up 3-0. Chicago will look to bounce back here tonight and even the series at one each.

Brennan Bernardino and the Boston Red Sox will take on Pablo Lopez and the Minnesota Twins on Saturday afternoon.

The Boston Red Sox will take the field again at Target Field for the second game of a three-game series on Saturday afternoon in Minneapolis taking on the Minnesota Twins. The hometown Twins came away with the win in the first game of the series last night 5-2. It was all Minnesota all game and it started in the third inning with second baseman Edouard Julien scoring Willi Castro on an RBI single. It wasn’t until the seventh when more runs started flying in. Castro sacrificed and scored Austin Martin on a throwing error followed by Julien walking and scoring Castro again. Ryan Jeffers then hit a two-run RBI double that took the score to 5-0 heading into the eighth inning. Rafael Devers got the Red Sox’s first runs of the game on a two-run RBI double in the top of the eighth inning, but no one else could find rhythm.

Boston will elect to start Brennan Bernardino on the mound tonight in the second game of this series. The left-hander is 0-1 this season with a 0.73 ERA and a 0.81 WHIP.
